News From Our 5th Grade Classroom 4/25/16

What's Happening in the Classroom

Subjects



Reading



In reading, we will finish with our poetry unit this week. We will have a quiz over the features of poetry and analyze a poem on Monday. We will then begin practice and perform "Poetry Theater" for the rest of the week.

Your child will receive a take-home science test on Monday which will be due Monday, 5/9.


Math



On Monday during math, we will complete an ISTEP Book II test (this is a pilot test for next year that Valpo schools was chosen to participate in. It will not affect your child's ISTEP scores.)


We will finish our work from unit 5 of Bridges, concentrating on collecting data and creating and interpreting graphs. There will be a test on this material as well as long division on Tuesday (5/3).


We will begin a series of review lessons based on math topics 6th grade teachers have asked us to review, beginning with the order of operations.



Writing & Language Arts



We will continue a review unit in language. We will review verb tenses and verb types.




Social Studies


We will continue our social studies unit on the Civil War. Students will take a vocabulary quiz Thursday (5/5) and will review in class for it on Wednesday

A Note from Student Council


Student Council is sponsoring "Mayhem Days" in May. They are fun, dress up days for our Central students and staff.


Friday, May 6 - Crazy Hair Day


Thursday, May 12 - Neon Day (wear neon colored clothing)


Friday, May 20 - Famous Person Day (dress up like someone famous from the past or present!!)


Friday, May 27 - Favorite Sports Team Day (wear a shirt or jersey from your favorite professional or college sports team)
