Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Welcome back!! We had an extremely smooth opening on Tuesday! We have been preparing for our students’ return all summer and are so grateful to have them back! Thank you for sending your child ready to learn this school year.
I am sure many of you have been worried about the air quality and how that may have affected your child. Following district guidance, we have had indoor recess and PE for Wednesday and most of Thursday. That being said, we made sure students were physically active during their recess time so they were able to focus on their learning later.
There is a new district wide volunteer policy this school year. Essentially, if you volunteer, you must have your background check done. Additionally, you will be unable to bring a younger sibling. This would apply to any activity you are volunteering for including copying in the workroom and/or helping with On The Move. If you are coming to school to watch your child perform and/or are having lunch with your child, you do not need your background check done and you can bring the younger sibling. Siblings are, of course, welcome at any parent meetings as well. Please refer to this district document for further details.
Curriculum Night is next Thursday. Here is the schedule for the night:
5:00pm-6:00pm ELL Parent Meeting
6:00pm-6:40pm K-2nd Grade Classroom Presentations
6:45pm-7:15pm Principal’s Presentation in gym (also livestreamed into classrooms)
7:40pm-8:00pm 3rd-5th Grade Classroom Presentations
I encourage you to come to our Curriculum Night. It is a wonderful way to learn about the curricular focus for the year and get to know your child’s teacher. I look forward to seeing all of you on this special night.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner
Jogathon
It’s time to launch our annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser 2017. Our run will occur on Friday, October 6th.
The Jog-A-Thon is our main fundraiser for the PTO’s general budget, funding a huge variety of our school’s programs and activities. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000 and have 100% student body participation! If each student raised a minimum of $60, we would easily surpass our goals! This year, we have a fun and exciting incentive to meet our goal. If we reach $35,000, Principal Sheila Baumgardner and our Assistant Principal Jennifer DeMartino have agreed to ride tricycles throughout the school for an entire school day dressed in costume! There may even be a race at the assembly. Kids…let’s reach this goal!
We will once again be using Pledgestar in addition to the donation envelopes as a way to reach out to friends and family both near and far. Collecting donations has never been easier, especially from friends and family that live out of town. You need to set up your Pledgestar account every year, but it really is quick and painless. Just visit www.pledgestar.com/oakhills to get started.
It takes a large number of volunteers to make this amazing event and fundraiser happen. We need adults to help tally laps for every class at each grade level as well as helpers for set-up and clean-up.
All volunteers and visitors need to complete the district’s volunteer background check before being eligible to work with students and volunteer in the school and classroom. It only takes a few minutes, but needs to be done several weeks before you plan to volunteer at school! Please visit https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage to get started.
Jog-A-Thon pledge packets and information will be going home this Friday, September 8th. Please review the information provided and feel free to contact the Jog-A-Thon team at jogathon@oakhillspto.org if you have any questions.
PTO Picnic a Huge Success!
Special thanks to our PTO board for organizing the picnic and to Homeplate Sliders, Taco King, and Locos Churros for bringing their food trucks. It looked like everyone was having a blast at this annual event. We would also like to thank our PTO and especially Heather Lambert for providing all Oak Hills staff with the Oak Hills 50th Anniversary T-shirts. We love them!
Thank you for taking care of us!
We would like to thank our PTO Board for the first day breakfast, Jason Bender, from the OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE for a staff lunch, First Grade Teacher, Korina Grover's parents - Kelly and Jay from HOFFMAN FARMS, for providing Mini Pies, and David Best, from BALES THRIFTWAY, for providing muffins, coffee cakes, and doughnuts for our teachers and staff during pre-service week. We appreciate you taking care of us!!
Physical Education Program (PEP)
The Beaverton School District has been awarded a $669,484 Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is in year two of the three year grant. The Beaverton School District (BSD) has developed a comprehensive project to improve the quality of physical education in the District, increase physical activity before, during, and after school, and create a school culture of wellness and activity that improves student health, nutrition, social/emotional development, and learning outcomes. In addition to the grant funds, the District has developed several community partnerships to support the project including Nike and Tualatin Hills for a contribution of over $235,000. The BSD program will serve more than 28,000 K-8 students. As part of this grant there is required data that must be collected on physical activity, nutrition and physical fitness. Please read the attached form with more information about the data collection. If after reading you decide your student will not participate in the data collection, print, sign and send the form back to the main office of your student’s school.
