Estimadas familias,

Espero que todos estén bien y hayan tenido una buena semana. ¡Qué semana hemos tenido aquí en James John! Aunque no pude estar allí, escuché muchas cosas maravillosas sobre nuestra celebración del Mes de la Historia Negra el miércoles pasado. Según todos los informes, cerca de 700 personas asistieron a este evento, disfrutaron de comida deliciosa, actividades interesantes y actuaciones estelares. Hay mucho agradecimiento para todos aquellos que ayudaron a hacer posible este evento: a nuestro equipo organizador del evento: Temerza Mehretab (maestra de primer grado), Susy Wassmuth (Administradora del sitio SUN), Ja'Monae Clay - (SUN Family Outreach ) y Martin Castillo, a nuestro personal y padres voluntarios de James John que contribuyeron para que la noche fuera un éxito, y a todos nuestros estudiantes que contribuyeron con sus voces y creatividad en la planificación y durante la celebración. Como se indicó en las camisetas de nuestra escuela para este mes, "la injusticia en cualquier lugar es una amenaza para la justicia en todas partes" y ver la increíble participación fue un testimonio del apoyo de nuestra comunidad a la excelencia negra, la historia negra y la equidad.

De lo contrario, como algunos de ustedes saben, pasé la mayor parte de esta semana en casa recuperándome de mi primer caso de Covid-19. Fue una experiencia aleccionadora después de no obtenerlo durante casi tres años en esta pandemia. Afortunadamente tuve síntomas leves y me siento mucho mejor ahora que estaba de vuelta en la escuela hoy. ¡Quería dar un agradecimiento adicional al Subdirector Castillo por hacer un gran trabajo "dirigiendo el barco" mientras yo estaba fuera! Animo a todos a seguir los protocolos de seguridad para usted y sus hijos y permanecer en casa si está enfermo. ¡Os deseo a todos un gran fin de semana!

Dear Families,

I hope you all are doing well and have had a good week. What a week we have had here at James John! Although I was not able to be there, I heard so many wonderful things about our Black History Month Celebration this past Wednesday. By all reports, we had close to 700 people attend this event, enjoying delicious food, engaging activities and stellar performances. There is so much appreciation to go around to all of those who helped make this event possible: to our event organizing team: Temerza Mehretab (1st Grade Teacher), Susy Wassmuth (SUN Site Manager), Ja’Monae Clay - (SUN Family Outreach) and Martin Castillo, to our many James John staff and parent volunteers who turned out to make the night a success, and to all our students who contributed their voices and creativity in the planning and during the celebration. As was indicated on our school t-shirts for this month, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” and seeing the amazing turnout was a testament to our community support for Black Excellence, Black History and equity.

Otherwise, as some of you were aware, I spent most of this week at home recovering from my first case of Covid-19. It was a humbling experience after not getting it for almost three years into this pandemic. Fortunately I had mild symptoms and I am feeling much better now as I was back at school today. I wanted to give an additional shout-out to Assistant Principal Mr. Castillo for doing a great shop “steering the ship” while I was out! I encourage everyone to continue to follow safety protocols for you and your children and please remain at home if you are sick. I wish you all a great weekend!

Lale Santelices (hablante de español) y Meaghan Russell de PBOT Rutas Seguras a la Escuela estarán en James John el 8 de marzo a las 2:30 para brindarles a nuestras familias (y a sus estudiantes, si lo desean) un entrenamiento en bicicleta. El entrenamiento comienza justo después de la escuela. Nos reuniremos en la entrada principal de la escuela (en Charleston), recibiremos instrucción, daremos un paseo juntos y regresaremos antes de las 3:30.

Want to join or lead a Bike Bus to school? What is a Bike Bus? James John has two, thank you Adrienne and Jason and all the family members getting on bikes each Wednesday making it possible!

Lale Santelices (Spanish speaker) and Meaghan Russell from PBOT Safe Routes to School will be at James John on March 8th at 2:30 to give our families (and their students if they like) a Bike Bus Training. Training starts right after school. We will meet at the main entrance of the school (on Charleston), receive instruction, go for a ride together and return before 3:30.
