April 2016

School Library Month

School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians' celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April school librarians are encouraged to host activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in transforming learning. More about the history of School Library Month.

Carts Behind the Desk

Please refrain from choosing books on the carts behind our desks without checking with us. This is where we store our work carts and not all books are processed and ready for check out. If you see a "must have" please check with Loretta or Ashley first. Thank you!

Library Skills

This month in library skills we will be working on:

Kindergarten: Bug research, iPads

1st grade: How to Smore poems, centers

2nd grade: Makerspace whole group challenge, Spine Poetry

3rd grade: Technology Assessment, shelf talkers

4th grade: Big6 Wisconsin research project, My Quest

5th grade: Genius Hour presentations, Technology Assessment

5th Grade Geniuses

This spring in place of our usual BIG6 research project in 5th grade, students participated in a Genius Hour project. The concept is based on Google's 20% time model. Basically, kids were allowed to choose to research whatever they wanted as long as their project 1) included a guiding question, 2) research and 3) was shared out with the class or the world!

The kids were enthusiastic participants and engaged throughout the process. You may have seen some of them presenting or hauling in props for their presentations. Students shared what they learned from the process in any format except a slideshow. We saw speeches, movies, posters, websites and more! Some students learned how to knit, crochet, bake, build a model car or snowmobile, make a website, dangers of smoking, self help website, how to become a famous singer or turkey hunting tips, just to name a few!

BOOK IT! Printables

The Book It! website has a teacher section and includes tons of printables. There is a section called Award Diplomas that is helpful as you wrap up this year's Book It! program.

Next year's packets have already been requested and should be here in the fall.

Computer Lab Schedule

Due to Forward Exam testing in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade your computer lab time may be unavailable some days in April and/or May. Please check the computer lab Google Calendar to see if your time is still available each week.

The cheat sheet to finding and accessing the calendar can be found here.
