"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - Each morning as we get the day started next week, we will be listening to Johann Pachelbel’s Canon
It’s as simple as three violins, one cello, and eight bars of music repeated 28 times. Johann Pachelbel’s Canon is one of the best-known pieces of classical music ever written.
Not very much is known about Pachelbel’s most famous piece. We don’t even know exactly when it was composed, although it’s thought it was around 1680. Some say that the music was written for the wedding of Bach’s brother, Johann Christoph.
The Canon became popular in the 1970s, after a French conductor Paillard made a recording. Since then, the music has been recorded hundreds of times, and has made its way into pop songs, films, and adverts.
The question this week is: In music, what does the word “Canon” mean?
There will be 2 bubbles/points for a correct answer.
The answer to last week’s question is: John Lennon was a member of ‘The Beatles”.
Parents/Guardians at HES have a conversation with Superintendent Carpenter and the HES Administrative Team about our school and district...
FYI- We encourage all students to utilize our bus service as they are NEVER marked tardy if arriving by bus...
Being sensitive to the number of cars in the morning and the 10 minute window to start the day, more than one car should be unloading at a time (we make every effort to ensure the sidewalks are cleared of snow/ice and can accommodate at least 5 drop-offs at a time). Please have your child ready to unload and remind them to stay on the right of the sidewalk as cars leave. If your child needs additional assistance, please pull up to the 'coned' area to allow others behind you to pull out safely.
For the safety of our students, please plan accordingly if driving students to school. NOTE: Occasionally, as we did with the last snow storm, staff will be remain after the bell rings to ensure all arrive safely and students on that day are not marked tardy.
We thank you for your understanding, cooperation and advanced planning.
Mrs. Fisler's and Ms. Cook's 2nd graders meet the volunteers that manage and organize the local food pantry.
2nd grade Community Service Project annually visits the food pantry to learn about how it helps neighbors in need and delivers donations from our school community.
Ms. Gushee helps 2nd grade students from Ms. Cook's classroom to load up 6 bus seats 'full to the brim' of our donations for the food pantry.
"HESnapshot" - Featured staff of the Week ... Our MAIN OFFICE Administrative Assistants.
Cheryl Hoffman - Administrative Assistant
After vacationing on Cape Cod most of my life, I moved here 12 years ago with my husband Tim from New Jersey where we both grew up. We live in Brewster with our dog, Chesty. We have two sons, ages 34 and 36. Our oldest son is a Veteran (Marines) and lives in the bush of Alaska with his dog Opha Mae. He works odd jobs, loves to cook (attended CIA), and just LOVES the wilderness of Alaska. Our youngest son still lives in NJ, owns his own excavating and paving business, races sprint cars and is learning to fly planes.
I attended a local community college after high school and then completed a 2 year Radiologic Technologist program at a local teaching hospital. I obtained my RT license and worked as an x-ray-technologist in the hospital for 5 years before becoming a stay at home mom. I have also worked as a dental assistant/front desk receptionist in dental offices both in NJ and Cape Cod. My career in a school began in NJ when my boys were 6 and 8. I wanted a job with the same schedule as my boys, so I started volunteering in our local school, then substituted, and was hired as Administrative Assistant to the Special Education Director for 17 years.
In January 2007, I was hired as Administrative Assistant to the Principal at Harwich Elementary. I feel very fortunate to have become part of this school and school district. I am very lucky to work with such a dedicated staff, and in such a nice facility. I enjoy my job, and love being with children. No two days are alike, which is the best part of this job…each day is a new adventure!
In my spare time outside of school, I enjoy many outdoor activities. I love to hike, walk on the beach, fish, and garden…most of which I do with my husband! I love living on Cape Cod, and am very grateful to live in such a beautiful place with so many opportunities to enjoy nature. There are very few places on earth where you can enjoy the bay, ocean, 365 freshwater ponds and observe whales, sharks, seals, porpoises, birds, and many other critters! Cape Cod has some of the most breathtaking scenery and sunsets I have ever experienced. Someday I hope to travel the United States in a travel trailer with my husband and spend a significant amount of time in Alaska…we visited our son there last summer and it was LIFE CHANGING…I can’t wait to go back!
Betsy Robinson- Administrative Assistant
My name is Betsy Robinson. I am an Administrative Assistant in the front office at Harwich Elementary School. I grew up in CT where I met and married my high school sweetheart, Dave. I graduated from Katharine Gibbs in Norwalk, CT , and worked at an attorney’s office and then the corporate office of a printing company. In 1985, my husband was offered a job to help “grow in” the Captains Golf Course in Brewster. Ironically, my husband and I grew up vacationing on the Cape (my family in Wellfleet and Dave’s in Brewster) so moving here was a quick decision. During the 1985-86 school year, I began working at Harwich Elementary in the front office. I left in March for the birth of our first daughter, Amy. Our second daughter, Emily, was born in 1988. In the fall of ’89 we moved to Jaffrey, NH where my husband “grew in” his second golf course (The Shattuck Inn) at the base of Mt. Monadnock. It was with great joy that we welcomed our son, DJ, in December, 1991. We thoroughly enjoyed our five years in NH, but moved back to Cape Cod when my husband was offered an opportunity to “grow in” his third golf course at The Atlantic Country Club in Plymouth. During the summer of 1998, I was offered the job at Harwich Elementary and have remained ever since. I love my job and the interactions I have with teachers, students and parents. All of our children came through the Harwich school system and had wonderful experiences. They are grown now and no longer live at home. Amy married 2+ years ago, lives in Harwich and works at a clothing store as a “buyer”. Emily lives in Somerville, MA where she nannies for a 3 year old boy and works on a vegetable farm with organic practices. DJ recently moved to Warren, VT where he was given the opportunity to help build a sugar house and learn to tap the trees for the sap to make maple syrup. He also helps out on a farm with four horses, two goats and 100+ chickens. In my spare time I like to read, garden and take long walks on the beach. The best ones are on the flats in Brewster where we can walk for miles.
Cindy Leahy - Administrative Assistant
My name is Cindy Leahy. I am an Administrative Assistant in the main office at Harwich Elementary School. I was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. I attended Westfield State College and received a Bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in Communications and Journalism. I met my husband, Jim in Springfield and moved to the Cape a week after we married in 1983. We lived in North Eastham and Wellfleet before building and moving into our present home in East Harwich in 1985. We raised two sons who who were lucky enough to grow up in Harwich - attending and graduating from Harwich public schools. I began working as an Administrative AssIstant in Springfield at a local social service agency, after moving to the Cape I continued the same work at Nauset Regional High School before I began work at HES in 1999. I feel very fortunate to live on Cape Cod and love its beauty in every season. I love to spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy the beach, attending concerts, long walks in locations all over the Cape, and reading.
"HARWICH HIGH FIVES" for the week!
