Overall Job Description

A genetic engineer modifies the genes of an organism to produce desired traits. The outcomes of genetic engineering can be varied, and it can be applied in many fields like agriculture, or medicine. It can result in disease resistant plants, or a variety of other things.

Major Job Responsibilities

Genetally modifying organisms takes 4 steps.

  1. The organism with the desired trait has its DNA extracted.
  2. The desired gene is extracted fron the rest of the DNA.
  3. Modifications are made to the gene to allow it to be used in the new organism
  4. The modified gene is inserted into the new organism. There are a variety of ways to isert a gene, but a common method is to use a gene gun.
