KHS Coding Club
What is Coding?
Coding is the language in which websites, applications, programs, and software are written. There are multiple languages of code and computer science. Computer science and coding builds critical thinking, iteration, and problem solving skills in students. Did you know.....
- Nine in ten parents want their child to study computer science, but only one in four schools teach computer programming.
- Computing makes up 2/3 of projected new jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
- Computing occupations are among the highest-paying jobs for new graduates. Yet fewer than 3% of college students graduate with a degree in computer science, and only 8% of STEM graduates are in computer science.
- In 22 states, computer science classes don’t count toward math or science high school graduation requirements.
- Only 22 percent of AP Computer Science students are women.
Coding at KHS
Sheldon ISD has coding clubs or programs in each elementary and middle school. We are looking for a sponsor for a coding club at KHS to allow interested students at ALL campuses the opportunity to explore and learn computer science skills.
All the sponsor will need is access to computers or chromebooks to start the club. Other equipment can be discussed after the club gets going. Ms. Clark will assist the sponsor with activities for the students and with facilitating the club. The ideal sponsor will have:
- no previous coding experience required!
- one day a week available after school for the club (Thursdays if possible)
- a willingness to learn new things
- a willingness to learn from students
- the ability to advertise and recruit students to the club
- must be able to bring students to the SISD Science/Tech fair in December to exhibit their products.
