21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
It's been a long winter season for our student athletes & coaches ... battling COVID just as much as they battle our opponents, but what they've been working towards all year is almost here!!
This past week was INTENSE, ACTION-PACKED, and full of HIGHLIGHTS! Some W's earned on the hardwood and in the water ... along with a conference championship meet ... helped make it a GREAT WEEK of sports!
Grab a mask, a chair and your favorite mittens ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Girls
After a strong 2nd place finish at last weekend's NCC CHAMPIONSHIP, the Lady Brickies finished off the regular season in style this past week with two meets and two "W's"!!
Tuesday, Porter County neighbor Wheeler visited The Friendly City and 2 hours later left town with their Bearcat tail between their legs after the Lady Brickies BURIED them under an avalanche of points 119-61! Hobart took 1st in 10 of 12 events in one of the best performances of the season! Senior Emma "Doin It" Wright and classmate Alivia Ahner each brought home two individual 1sts and were joined on the podium throughout the meet by fellow seniors Ana Tepavcevich & Delaney O'Brien, junior Chelsea Chavez and freshman Zoe Johnston! In the 500 Free ... the longest distance of the competition ... juniors Brennis Carrillo and Brooke Blanchard TIED for 2nd in 6:43.39! WHAT A RACE!! WHAT A GREAT NIGHT FOR THE LADY BRICKIES!!

Thursday's final home meet of the season brought the Calumet Warriors to town. With only 5 girls competing for the Warriors, this one was an easy night for Hobart as our girls got to swim some "off" events to stay fresh and enjoy their last regular season competition before the IHSAA Sectional begins in just under two weeks.
Results from Thursday's meet vs. Calumet:
EVERYONE DID AN AWESOME JOB!!
We are less than two weeks away from the start of the IHSAA Tournament Series for Girls Swimming & Diving and our coaching staff seems to have the Lady Brickies peaking at just the right time! Hobart finished the regular season with a 9-3 mark and in 2nd place in the NCC!! We can't wait to see what the postseason has in store for our girls! LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!
Boys
Still riding high off their 1st "W" of the season a week ago, the Brickies were swimming for more of the same this past week with competitions against Wheeler & Calumet before hosting the NCC CHAMPIONSHIP on Saturday!
Tuesday, Hobart hosted the Wheeler Bearcats in non-conference action and every point counted in what turned out to be one of the closest meets of the season! The Brickies only won 2 events, but stayed close throughout by placing 2nd in 8 & 3rd in 6 others. Unfortunately, the depth of competitiveness in the lineup shown by our boys wasn't enough to defeat the Bearcats and we lost a tough one 89-80. The 200 Medley Relay team of sophomore Owen Finch, senior Chad Tomaga, and juniors Nathaniel Mamushe & Jeydan Fifer won the opening event of the night and junior diving sensation Ethan Ferba AGAIN scored over 300 (3rd straight meet) in the 1-m dive for Hobart's other 1st place finish. Despite the loss, the Brickies still appear to be treading in the right direction as times continue to drop all over the scoresheet!
Here are results from Tuesday's meet against the Bearcats:
200 Medley Relay - 1st = sophomore Owen Finch, senior Chad Tomaga, junior Nathaniel Mamushe & junior Jeydan Fifer
200 Free - 2nd = Finch, 3rd = freshman Brett Herrin, 4th = junior Ethan Sy
200 IM - 2nd = Mamushe
50 Free - 2nd = Fifer, 3rd = Tomaga, 5th = freshman Luke Weinman
Diving - 1st - junior Ethan Ferba, 2nd = junior Hayden Maggio, 5th = freshman Ethan Robles
100 Fly - 2nd = Mamushe, 3rd = sophomore Noah Bailey
100 Free - 2nd = Fifer, 3rd = Sy, 4th = Weinman
200 Free Relay - 2nd = Tomaga, Finch, Fifer & Mamushe
100 Back - 2nd = Finch, 3rd = Bailey
100 Breast - 2nd = Tomaga, 3rd = Herrin
400 Free Relay - 2nd = Bailey, Weinman, Herrin & Sy
On Thursday, Calumet brought only 1 boy to compete, so much like the girls ... it was a night for the Brickies to swim some "off" events and get a great workout in to prepare for Saturday's NCC Meet. Speaking of workouts, junior Nathaniel Mamushe completed the 200 Free by doing the Butterfly for the entire distance! Classmate Ethan Ferba DID IT AGAIN - 300+ points in diving for the 4th CONSECUTIVE MEET! UNBELIEVABLE!!
Results from Thursday's meet vs. Calumet:
"W"
On Saturday, the HHS Aquatics Center played host to the Northwest Crossroads Conference CHAMPIONSHIPS! In the morning session, OUR BOYS SHINED on the diving board as all 3 Brickie competitors placed in the top 6! Junior Ethan Ferba successfully defended his 2020 crown by amassing 433.19 points on his way to completing an UNDEFEATED NCC campaign in 2021 and a 2nd consecutive NCC CHAMPIONSHIP!! Classmate Hayden Maggio also earned ALL-NCC Honors with a 3rd place finish and freshman Ethan Robles came in 5th!! In the afternoon session, the Brickies were FANTASTIC right off the blocks with the 200 Medley Relay team earning ALL-NCC Honors with a 3rd place finish ... just .02 seconds ahead of 4th place Highland!! Out of the 16 total races swam by a Brickie, 13 of them were a SEASON BEST PERFORMANCE!! THAT'S INCREDIBLE!! The outstanding day culminated with a 4th place finish for our boys ... just 2 pts shy of 3rd ... after not winning an NCC dual meet during the season! SIMPLY AMAZING!!
The swimmers & divers listed below earned ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS:
200 Medley Relay - 3rd = sophomore Owen Finch, senior Chad Tomaga, junior Nathaniel Mamushe & junior Jeydan Fifer
Diving - 1st = junior Ethan Ferba, 3rd = junior Hayden Maggio
Hobart now has a month until the IHSAA Sectional. Saturday was great, but our best times are still ahead!!

The Lady Brickies were hard at WORK WORK WORK this past week playing 3 games over a 4-day span!
On Tuesday, Hobart hosted NWI Top Ten Merrillville, winners in 9 of their last 10 games. Unfortunately, the Lady Brickies were still competing without 4 varsity regulars and had trouble finding any offensive rhythm against the Lady Pirate defense. Merrillville, however, seemed to connect on everything they threw at the basket and won convincingly 62-8. Back in 1961, The Shirelles told us that "Mama said there'll be days like this" and they were right, but our girls are RESILIENT and always seem to find a way to bounce back! WEEE ... WE BELIEEEEVE ... WE BELIEVE THAAAT ... you know the rest!!
Thursday @ Hammond Gavit, not only did WE BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN, but the Lady Brickies went out and DID IT!! Hobart STORMED out of the locker room and took a 15-2 lead after 8 minutes of play! At the half it was 32-11 and our girls never looked back! When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard showed a CONVINCING 67-46 VICTORY!! Senior Lexi Williams led the attack 17 points ... freshman guard Jesse Neace also reached double-figures with 11 points and sophomore Niko Latinovic added 10. In total, 8 different Lady Brickies scored in the win! TEAMWORK = DREAMWORK :)
On Friday night, Westville came to the friendly confines for our girls' final home contest of the regular season. At times, this one almost seemed like watching a tennis match as the two teams literally went back-n-forth ... Hobart would lead ... Westville would fight back ... again and again! Each time it looked like the Lady Brickies would start to gain control, the Lady Blackhawks kept crawling back into it and eventually things were all tied up heading into the final quarter of play! In a FRANTIC final 8 minutes, it was Westville who was able to string together a few key possessions at the right time to gain just enough of an advantage. Even though senior Lexi Williams drilled a top-of-the-key 3-pointer at the buzzer, the end result was a heartbreaking 51-47 loss. Williams again led Hobart in scoring with 19. Freshmen Jesse Neace & Emma Ortiz ... along with junior Melanie Leonard ... each tallied 7 in the loss.
The Lady Brickies are 6-11 on the year with 2 games remaining ... @ LaCrosse on Monday and @ Hammond on Friday. Hobart should be back at full strength for the home stretch before IHSAA Sectional play begins a week from Tuesday. WE GOT THIS!!
#SHEGOTGAME
Boys
The boys basketball team had Wednesday's contest @ Hammond Clark cancelled due to a COVID issue in Hammond; therefore, our only game this past week was a Saturday night affair @ Area Top-10 Ranked Munster. Similar to the girls game against Merrillville, Munster also entered the game winners of 9 out of their last 10 contests ... their only loss a 2-point heartbreaker to Class 3A #1-ranked Hammond. The red-hot Mustangs asserted themselves early and often against the Brickies and jumped out to an early lead that grew throughout the 1st half of action. Hobart fought hard to creep back in it one possession at a time and was able to close the gap some early in the 3rd. Unfortunately, Munster just had too much firepower and was also able to put the clamps down on the Brickie offensive attack ... winning the NCC matchup 68-20.
Hobart is currently 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in NCC play. This week is HUGE for the Brickies with 4 games in 6 days!! LET'S GET READY TO RUMMMMBBLLLEEEE!!
