JC Rocked It!!

Dear Parents, Students, and the entire Julian Curtiss community,

So we made it….It is the last day of school and we didn’t just make it we rocked it!

I know that this last part of the year was challenging for you as parents and guardians as you navigated the pandemic as it related to careers, childcare, staying healthy, and the overall safety of your family. I could not be more proud of our faculty, staff, community, and our parents for helping our students finish out the year strong. This experience will no doubt help teach our students to develop the “grit” that it takes to succeed in tough times such as these with COVID-19. So congratulations to YOU and our students for making the end of the school year a good one!

For our 5th Graders, we will miss everyone as they start their journey in middle school and embark on the next adventure before heading off to high school. I had the opportunity to speak to the fifth graders this morning at the Ringing Out Ceremony and I would like to share some of my message to them with you and your little ones because they apply to all of us…...

You received a pause in life, an intermission. We have never experienced this before.

You have had the opportunity to spend more time with your family and loved ones

and you have had time to explore your individual talents. We have seen those talents in your virtual classrooms, on Flipgrid, in the Talent Show, in the Virtual Band and Orchestra Recitals, and Field Day. Students, you rocked it!

The Vision of the Graduate states that “The Greenwich Public Schools are committed to preparing students to function effectively in an interdependent global community.” We are learning first hand how we are an “interdependent global community.” Through this pandemic, we have learned to conduct ourselves in an ethical and responsible manner by social distancing and taking care of each other. This is an extension of our principles as an international school.

Each one of you has been a member of the Julian Curtiss School that represents the broad diversity we see within the borders of Greenwich, across America, and across the world. Our mosaic of races, religions, and languages are our greatest strength. The Julian Curtiss School partners with our families and community to embrace our differences and through them are inspired to make the world a better place. Never has this been more important!

This year we all took part in the “The Culture Within Us.” My message delivered on UN Day states, “We will empower our community and the children to decide what they want to change not only for themselves but also for the benefit of the community, building good global citizens.” Our school project was fittingly named by you, our students, as “The Culture Within Us.” Take with you the respect and acceptance learned here at JC that requires all of us to have due regard for culture, values, customs, and beliefs. Once you embody this respect and acceptance you can model the essential elements of democracy—liberty, justice, the common good, equality, diversity, and truth so you can experience and contribute to your school environment, the community, and the world.

We have learned that a school building does not define an excellent school. Relationships between students and teachers, students and students, and students and parents define school. Motivation, initiation, and hard work from students, teachers, and parents is what defines school.

Thank you to all of our students, teachers, and parents for helping us create a new definition of an excellent school! You have made history! Congratulations, you are ready for the next steps in life. This is just the beginning….

I am sure that there will be continued communication this summer about the fall as we keep you informed of what school might look like in the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.

On behalf of the entire Julian Curtiss staff we wish you all a wonderful summer. Please feel free to contact any of us with questions during the summer at trish_mcguire@greenwich.k12.ct.us ,

Congratulations Fifth Graders!

Today was a beautiful day to celebrate the Ringing Out of our JC 5th graders! Although it wasn't our traditional ceremony, it was festive and fabulous! We were able to live stream at least part of all three classes. The YouTube links are below.

From the JC Library Learning Commons

In addition to the district summer learning opportunities, I created a JC Summer Learning 2020 Virtual Classroom, using Google Classroom. Please enter the code in Google Classroom app (available in Self Service): jba4qfw. I am hoping to curate for you the latest read alouds, book recommendations, book club opportunities, and engaging makerspace activities which I plan to switch out every three weeks. I would love to build on the momentum we gained this year, and provide our learners with opportunities that are, of course, optional.
