The Downside of Juicing Flowers
Lysander's nonexistant totally messed up life. By Joshua
Lysander's totally messed up life:
Lysander starts out as your normal handsome teenager. But with the help of the juice of a magical flower, falls in love with the wrong people and manages to get his life completely messed up for a detrimental couple of days before finally coming back home for a final, happy ending.
I chose these songs because they reflect what's happening to the character at that point in time. I feel like when your personality matches a song, it'll be one you'll want to listen to.
Fun.: We Are Young ft. Janelle Monáe [OFFICIAL VIDEO]
We Are Young - Fun ft. Janelle Monae
This song represents Lysanders personality at the beginning of the book. In the beginning he is a guy who just wants to go through life with his girlfriend, not caring what trouble he stirs up. But at some point trouble finds him, and he gets thrown into this whole problem.
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley
This song best represents Lysander at the beginning of the book when he has to make the choice of whether of not to become an outlaw and keep loving Hermia, or dump her and let Demetrius have her. Even the title of the song helps explain this. In the end, he doesn't 'let Hermia go' and decides to run away...
OK Go - I Won't Let You Down - Official Video
I Won't Let You Down - OK Go
This song is about not letting your love down, and that fits in perfectly with Lysander's vow to Hermia to make sure they will meet at the right place at the right time to flee Athens. This part was a must in my playlist because it takes up a whole few pages of the book.
Pharrell Williams - Happy (Official Music Video)
Happy - Pharrell Williams
This song fits here because it represents the happiness of freedom from all bonds to what you always thought would hold you down. And that's basically Lysander and Hermia are feeling after they've successfully fled Athens and are free to do whatever they want to do.
The Lion King - Can You Feel The Love Tonight
Can You Feel the Love Tonight - The Lion King
I chose this song because, just like in the story, two outcasts make out. Lysander and Hermia have just ran away from home and are enjoying their freedom of all the parental bonds that hold them away from each other at home. But this peace is soon to be broken to pieces
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction
Even though this group has many haters, this song fits in perfectly with Helena's reaction to Lysander's sudden interest in her. This is of course from Lysander's point of view, and it fits very well into Helena's reaction as well.
Jessica Lowndes - I don't want you anymore lyrics
I Don't Want You Anymore - Jessica Lowndes
This song represents the part in the story where Lysander tells Hermia that he doesn't love her anymore and has moved on to Helena. This song goes with the breaking up theme and a strong disliking of your past lover, which is exactly what happens here in the book
Bryan Adams - Please Forgive Me
Please Forgive Me - Bryan Adams
I'm going back to the oldies with this song, but it fits the context of the story after when Puck finally uses the powers of the flower again to set things right. Lysander can most likely see his mistakes and he wants Hermia to understand that he doesn't know what happened but they can be together from then on.
Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) - official video
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye ft. Kimbra
This song represents Lysander's personality at the end of the book, where he is a hardened man, and knows more about himself than he used to. His old self is just 'somebody that he used to know'.
Lifehouse - You And Me
You and Me - Lifehouse
I chose this song because it is a nice ending to the long and treacherous journey of our character, Lysander. In the end, Shakespeare decides to end the play with a happy ending, with Lysander and Hermia together laughing over foolish plays of poor hooligans.
