Chamber of Commerce Northwest Read Aloud
On behalf of the students and staff of James Morris School, I want to thank the members of the community who visited JMS yesterday for the annual Northwest CT Chamber of Commerce Read Aloud!
Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) Art Award
Congratulations to Sierra and Anthony, the James Morris School recipients of the Connecticut Association of School's Celebration of the Arts Awards. This award is given to two sixth grade students from each Connecticut school who show outstanding ability in the performing or visual arts. Citizenship and cooperation skills are also taken into consideration.
Sierra participates in the elementary concert band, the inter-elementary jazz band, and the inter-elementary select choir. Sierra has auditioned for the annual Middle School Northern Regional Music Festival this year. In addition to her participation in school music ensembles, she also studies music privately. Her enthusiasm towards learning is evident not only in the music program, but within the visual arts as well.
Anthony participates in both the inter-elementary jazz band and the elementary concert band. This year, Anthony has auditioned for the annual Middle School Northern Regional Music Festival. In addition to his music participation in school, Anthony studies music privately and is very interested in composing music.
The award recipients from Goshen Center School, James Morris School, and Warren School joined awardees from other Connecticut schools at the CAS Elementary Arts Banquet on Monday evening. They were joined by their family members Mrs. Bills, Ms. Cook, and Mrs. Sweet.
Northern Regional Band Performers
Sierra Cortes auditioned for the Northern Region band in January after months of preparation. She received word that she made it into the band, and is now preparing for that wonderful experience! In March, she will spend a weekend with students from all over the Northern region of Connecticut rehearsing for and performing a concert of very advanced music, along with two other elementary students from Region 6. We wish her all the best for this exciting opportunity!
Community Service Award
The Secretary of the State, Denise W. Merrill and the Connecticut Citizenship Fund, Inc. will be recognizing students throughout Connecticut who have made a difference within their community. In support of this wonderful effort, Region 6 elementary schools will each recognize one student from 5th or 6th grade for this award. Students will be given additional information about the application process by their school principal.
Activity Night and Sports Clinic
On Saturday, February 11th, all 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are invited to participate in an activity night and sports clinic that will run from 5pm to 7pm in the small and large gyms at Wamogo. The price is $10 per student and concessions will be available for sale throughout the evening - the proceeds of which go toward student activities. Students should enter through the front of the building by the Wamogo cafeteria and can be picked up in the same place. If you are interested in chaperoning this program or have any general questions, please email Steven Bagley at Sbagley@rsd6.org

Winter weather is underway, and with it comes inevitable delays and cancellations. Please be sure that your contact information is up to date, so that the alert system, School Messenger, can notify you of delays and cancellations in a timely manner. JMS Sunflower Walking Sticks
JMS 4th grade students are creating walking sticks by repurposing sunflower stalks grown in the Giving Garden. These walking sticks will be sold to raise money for the White Memorial Foundation because we all use the trails and have learned so much about our environment through White Memorial. Please see the flyer below to order. Supplies are limited!
JMS Sunflower Seed Company
The mission of JMS Sunny Seeds Seed Co. is to provide organic, raw, nutritional Giving Garden sunflower seeds and to reach out to help others in need. Through the purchase of the seed packets, our customers will help continue our support of local soup kitchens and the Little Guild Animal Shelter and Rescue Center in West Cornwall, CT. This project was started and coordinated by 6th graders. All K-6 students are helping to weigh seeds and make packets.
We hope you'll support this project by purchasing seeds using this order form:

]Cold Weather Clothing
As stated in our Student/Parent Handbook, we try to hold recess outdoors whenever possible. Students without boots must stay on the blacktop area as long as snow covers the playground.
