A Look at Our Week
Each day your children have been bringing smiles to our lips, and love to our hearts. We have been witnessing them building friendships with each other, and have seen many instances of kindness and compassion over the past week. They have been learning to work together as a class, with a partner and independently with much success. Last Thursday they set a new class record of reading independently for 16 minutes! They are smashing records, and eager in their goal setting.
In preparation for our field trip on Thursday to the Fire and Police Dept. in Asheville, we have been reading many books about community workers. We even discovered a "Firefighter A to Z book" which dovetailed beautifully into exploring the many different genres of ABC books. Your child was able to check out a book from the Media Center last Thursday. They will need to bring it back this Thursday to be able to check out another one. In addition, each night your child will bring home a book that they've chosen for you to read to/ with them. In the same bag is a collection of sight words. Please practice these each day with your child because they will help your child learn to read! When you read with them, please follow the words with your finger. Soon they will be chiming in, and helping you to read. Eventually they will be reading these books all by themselves.
In Fundations this week we are going to learn two vowels: "i-itch/i/" and "u-up-/u/", to add to the 5 consonants we have already learnt: n,m,b,f and t. Their penmanship is beautiful, as they also learn how to form these lowercase letters by hand.
Math is integrated throughout our day as we count everything there is to count! We are now learning how to record this data, and we will be writing a "Counting Book" this week in Math Workshop. We continue to sort shapes, objects and people by attributes.
Math Challenge: Find a hexagon shaped object in your surrounding environment, and snap a photo of it. You can email me your pictures at lindsay.fox@acsgmail.net.
During Choice Time, your children have been ardently playing 'Teacher'! They teach each other their numbers, letters and classroom expectations through their play. I knew teaching was fun! I've seen some amazing experiments with hot wheel tracks, and cars. They are learning that the steeper the ramp, the faster the car travels so we frequently see tracks suspended from cubbies and other high surfaces!
