Duneland School news for parents, students and teachers
Thursday, October 1, 2020 Vol. 55 No. 6
Message from the Superintendent...
On Monday, October 5, schools will move to Level 3, with students attending in-person coming to campus on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students selecting the remote learning model will continue to receive instruction without coming to campus.
In an effort to provide families with choices throughout the pandemic, students were able to change their learning model preference prior to this level change. 631 students moved from remote to an in-person learning model and 325 students moved from an in-person to remote learning model. Schedule changes for the Level 3 transition are a work in progress and will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 2. Some students will have teacher changes due to efforts to balance class sizes in an attempt to maintain social distancing.
The Skyward parent portal is now open to view possible student bus assignment changes that coincide with the Level 3 transition.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Dr. Chip Pettit, Superintendent

eLearning on Wednesdays
All students will work independently, via a traditional eLearning day, on Wednesdays due to the teaching constraints of preparing and providing instruction in two different instructional models (remote and in-person) or in a remote-only model. The eLearning module assignments will be posted in Canvas by 8 a.m. Students will need to complete an attendance activity each Wednesday to be counted present for the eLearning day. Teachers will not be conducting live (synchronous) class sessions or holding office hours on Wednesdays.

Progress Reports for K-4 Students
Student progress reports will be available in the Skyward Parent Portal on Friday, October 9th. This update is coming 3-weeks earlier than in a typical year due to the possibility of a teacher change for students when moving from Level 4 to Level 3 on October 5th.
In addition to quarterly report cards, student progress is monitored throughout the year using NWEA and mClass assessments. Kindergarten also utilizes ESGI to assess and monitor kindergarten skills. NWEA and mClass assessments are given three times a year to allow teachers the ability to identify areas to challenge and support a student’s academic needs. Individual student reports for these assessments will be sent home the week of October 12.
Parent Teacher Conferences K-6
Due to the fluid nature of the pandemic, the K-6 Parent Teacher Conferences originally scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2020 will not take place. Duneland teachers will continue to communicate progress and concerns with families on a regular basis.
Parents/Guardians may contact their child’s teacher(s) requesting updates on their child’s school work. As always parents may check student progress using their Skyward parent portal.
Duneland Schools to host NWI Food Bank Mobile Market 'Drive Thru' Distribution on Oct. 15

CHS Club Earth Community Clean-Up on October 10
The Chesterton High School organization Club Earth will host a day of community clean-up on Saturday, October 10. Members of the club will be independently cleaning up areas and picking up trash around their own homes, or other sites in the Duneland area if they wish.
Rather than have the club as a whole pick up trash in one location, spreading out individually will both increase the impact, as well as maintain safety due to COVID-19.
Additionally, to gain awareness and more participation towards taking care of the areas you live in, the club invites members of the community to also participate independently. Feel free to join the club members in sharing the Duneland Community Clean-Up Day on social media, using the hashtags #communitycleanup and #clubearth.
Please wear masks and use gloves when picking up trash, and especially if participating in this event with other people.

INTERNET CONNECTIVITY & IT SUPPORT
Internet Access for DSC Families
Duneland School Corporation understands that the pandemic has placed a heavy emphasis on internet connectivity in order to access learning within Canvas (our learning management system) and that there are several factors that may prevent you from receiving this service. We have provided information from our local providers below to assist you.
Comcast Internet Essentials - https://www.internetessentials.com/
About Comcast Internet Essentials:
Internet Essentials is a program for families and other income-limited households who currently do not subscribe to Internet services at home. Xfinity Internet customers are not eligible for Internet Essentials.
For all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service has increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream.
Households with outstanding debt owed to Comcast may be eligible for Internet Essentials. Comcast is waiving this qualification if you apply and are approved by December 31st, 2020 (standard eligibility rules apply).
Here are some quick links to the program and direct to the application. https://Apply.InternetEssentials.com = English Application Portal https://Aplicar.InternetEssentials.com = Spanish Application Portal
Frontier Lifeline - https://frontier.com/resources/discountprograms/lifeline-program
About the Frontier Lifeline program
If you have been living without phone service because you cannot afford it, you may be eligible for this government assistance program. Frontier is committed to helping qualified income-limited individuals pay for telephone service or qualifying internet access services by supporting the principles of Universal Service. The goal of Universal Service is to make telephone or qualifying internet access services affordable, by participating in low-income Lifeline (or Tribal Lifeline/Link Up) programs in all the states where Frontier provides service.
You can apply your Lifeline discount to qualifying standalone internet access services. If you do not have voice (traditional telephone) services with Frontier, but you have standalone internet access, you may be able to qualify for the Lifeline discount. Services and availability vary by location, so contact Customer Service and a Frontier representative will be happy to see if you have qualifying internet access services in your area.Did you know that several local businesses offer free WiFi?
