Brown County 4-H Monthly Communication
OBSERVING DEADLINES
We would like to remind club leaders, members, and parents to observe the various deadlines for the spring and summer 4-H youth activities and events. The Brown County Leaders developed the following policy for handling missed deadlines: “Members may enter a contest/event after the deadline date, but at the conclusion of the judging, their final ribbon will be dropped one place to reflect the late entry. No exceptions for late entry will be allowed.” Please see this policy is shared with all club members and their parents.
Final Enrollment
4-H final enrollment is May 31, 2022. That is the last chance for youth to join the 4-H program and the last chance for 4-H members to drop or add projects areas for this 4-H year. Each Main Club Leader will be e-mailed their club’s member enrollment and project enrollment list. If for any reason you cannot download and print the information, please contact our office. Review the information and confirm the project enrollment with each club member. It is important to have this enrollment information correct since it can affect county fair exhibits, project completion, member completion, awards and premiums.

4-H LIVESTOCK LITERACY
From clinics to competitions, the South Dakota 4-H program has a long history of promoting livestock education. Though youth are encouraged to maximize their livestock education by taking advantage of many learning opportunities, one Youth Livestock Literacy (YLL) certified event is required each program year for youth interested in exhibiting livestock in a county fair/achievement day or state fair. This YLL safety requirement mirrors South Dakota 4-H standards in other higher risk project areas. In the livestock project area, the primary safety concern is that youth understand the role they play in producing safe food for others to eat.
Here is a handy checklist SD4-H livestock exhibitors will complete before the annual June 1 deadline:
Enroll youth and projects in 4hOnline.
- If applicable to your species, get animals tagged with 4-H ear tags and DNA pulled and submitted.
Complete at least one YLL certified event.
- register for a Brown County 4-H Livestock Literacy Event, please register using the link below.
- If attending a YLL event out-of-county, you will provide attendance certificate to your home 4-H county’s Extension Office.
- If using YQCA Online as your YLL event, you will convey the completion certificate to the Brown County 4-H Office. https://yqcaprogram.org/
- This usually occurs during in-person YLL events, so if you used an alternative option, you would need to provide this to the Brown County 4-H Office.

Brown County 4-H ETHICS SD
Brown County will be participating in the ETHICS SD program this year. Ethics stand for Ecology, Trapping, History, Identification, Conservation, and Stewardship, which are all knowledgeable and skills emphasized throughout the class, along with the incredible sense of responsibility placed on trappers to ethically and humanely harvest wildlife. The program consists of classroom learning (with some outside reading) and hands-on activities. The plan is to have 5 classes and participants will be able to trap after that, with 2 check-in times to follow the five classes. Once furs are harvested, students learn skills in fleshing, stretching, salting, and dying furs to compete for a $1,000 in scholarships at next spring’s South Dakota’s Trappers Association youth division fur competition.
ETHICS SD class will be open to youth 11-18. Youth will have to enroll in 4-H to participate. The dates are as follows: May 11, 18 and 25, June 1 and 8 for meetings. The check-in meeting will be June 15.
Please contact the Brown County 4-H Office for more information and if your child would like to participate.
