College Go! Week
September 24-28 is College Go! week in Indiana. Schools across the state will be helping students explore information and resources designed to help Hoosiers plan for education beyond high school. Although not everyone goes to a traditional 4-year college, everyone will need some type of post-secondary training. Career choice determines the level and type of training each student will pursue.
At SMS, we will honor College Go! Week by starting each morning with a fight song from a college or university from which an SMS staff member graduated. During classes today, our teachers and staff will be talking to students about their college experience. Everyone is encouraged to wear college apparel all week. During guidance lessons this week, Mrs. Naugle and Mrs. Asdell will be sharing college resources and information with students as well as doing a giveaway of college swag.
Students, please talk to your family members about their education experiences after high school. Share with your family what careers you are interested in and what type of training, college or otherwise, you are interested in pursuing.
Dodge. Dip. Duck. Dive.

Friendship 101
Guidance has recently been teaching 6th graders about Friendship skills - lessons well learned for all of us. Maybe our 7th- and 8th-grade students remember some of these important skills! It’s always good to have a refresher.
Watch what you talk about, especially at school. Some topics are “public” - things that anyone could know and wouldn’t hurt anyone. Other topics are “private” or personal - things that not everyone should know. School is a public place. Most gossip and rumors come about because someone had a private conversation at school and it was overheard, or someone repeats private information when they shouldn’t. If you hear private information being shared at school and it worries you, talk with an adult, especially if it is about someone’s safety.
Listen with your eyes, ears, and heart. One of the most prized qualities in a good friend is someone who will really listen. Be kind and respect what one another has to say. We miss a lot of what a person says over text, social media, and other impersonal ways to communicate. When you speak with someone face-to-face, pay attention and show empathy.
We are all different, but we all have feelings. One of those feelings is anger. Everyone gets angry at one point or another - it’s natural and normal. But what we do with our anger can be positive or negative. Anger is our body’s way of telling us something is wrong. Ask “why am I angry?”, or when someone else is angry “what can I do to make the situation better?”. Find ways to cope with anger that work for you - ways to calm down until you can work out the situation. Talking with a trusted adult can help you find solutions.
You can’t expect to be friends with everybody - but these skills are useful with peers, adults, and families. Be kind. Think before you speak. Listen well. And take a deep breath - you got this!

"Your Life Speaks" Assembly October 1st
Bullying is a challenging issue in schools everywhere, including SMS, and it has a negative impact on more than just the students being bullied. In October, SMS will be having several activities to help us all understand and address bullying. To kick off our activities, we are welcoming Nathan Harmon from “Your Life Speaks” on October 1st. Nate has a powerful message to challenge each of us to make a change for the better. He brings home the impact of how we treat each other through his own life’s story. We will hear from him in an all-school assembly at 1:15 next Monday. We want to give special thanks to CEASe for helping us experience this amazing opportunity!
Winter Sports Update
If you plan to tryout for a winter sport, make sure you sign up on the Canvas Community page once those links are posted. You also need a physical on file in the office. If you've not yet had your Pre-Participation Exam from a doctor, you need to set your appointment soon! No physical = no tryout! And finally, you need to make grades! Coaches will be looking at first quarter grades when making team determinations!
If you have any questions, check with Mr. Smith.
