Message from the Superintendent

Hello Raider Families,

I first want to acknowledge the stress this past week has had on many of you, our staff, and our students. Our K-2 learning model will shift January 19 to five days per week, all in-person. Grades 3 and 4 will make the shift on February 1. Grade 5 will move back to hybrid on February 1 (more information below). At this point, there is no change for grades 6-12.

High School athletics began practices this past week, facility rentals opened up, and community education/senior center activities are set to begin returning.

As we make these changes and questions arise, please reach out to your teachers and building administration, as they will have the most specific information for your student.

Hastings Middle School 5th Graders Return to Hybrid

On February 1, our 5th graders will be returning to the Hybrid learning model at HMS. They will follow the same learning phases that we have posted on our website (hours 2, 4, and 6 begins on February 1). They will keep to the same daily schedule and bus times that were in place during our previous Hybrid learning. Fifth grade students will attend HMS on their cohort day on Monday/Tuesday OR Thursday/Friday. If there is a four day school week, we will not have flex days on Wednesday.

Wednesday, January 27 will be a regular learning day for 5th graders (not a flex day) and there will be no school for 5th graders on Thursday, January 28 and Friday, January 29 as 5th grade teachers will be planning for the transition back to Hybrid (these will be treated as snow days).

Grades 6-8 will remain in distance learning as we continue to monitor COVID numbers per the Department of Ed and Health requirements.

Increasing Connections at Hastings High School

As HHS looks to also increase connections with students, HHS will increase the expectation for students to attend class by Zoom. Starting after break on January 4, teachers will start their classes with Zoom meetings on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and students are expected to attend class on these days. This is a change in expectation from Zoom meetings on Monday and Thursday. Please note that the structure of Wednesday FLEX days will remain the same.

Transportation Update

Transportation routes are being reorganized for students in grades K-4 as we shift to in-person learning. Updated bus information will be available in the Campus Portal no later than January 14th by clicking “More” and then “Bus Information”. If your pick-up or drop-off location is not accurate, please contact your child’s Building Office.

Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) meeting

Our next Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) meeting will take place on January 14, 2021 at 6:30 PM. Parents of students receiving special education services and staff are welcome to attend. Please contact Kris Schlander at kschlander@hastings.k12.mn.us for the Zoom link.

Shout Out!

This week's shout out goes to our AVID 9 class! They recently worked together on a community project to help collect items for Hastings Family Service and The Lewis House. The students created a video, wrote emails, designed a flyer, promoted on various social media platforms, gathered boxes, and collected items from their neighbors. Then on January 6th, they collected donations of personal hygiene and sanitation items, in a drive up manner, at the high school. They delivered over 400 pounds to Hastings Family Service and The Lewis House! We are extremely proud of all the students in this class on how they came together to create and execute this project to support our community of Hastings in the middle of a pandemic.
