Signs of Suicide
To proactively address the important issue of teen suicide, Liberty Academy is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program encourages students to seek help if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. The SOS Program is the only youth suicide prevention program that has demonstrated an improvement in students’ knowledge and adaptive attitudes about suicide risk and depression, as well as a reduction in actual suicide attempts.
We are offering a Parent Training on March 12th at 5pm to discuss our suicide prevention efforts. Our school will then implement this one-day program to our students during the last week of March, 2019. Students will view a video during morning and then complete an adolescent depression screening. Students may be identified, based on their screening results, as needing further assessment by a mental health professional within the building. Parents will be contacted if their child has met with a mental health professional.
If you do NOT want your child to participate in the SOS Program in school, please contact Mrs. Streu or Ms. Johnson at Liberty Academy: 816.736.5470. If we do not hear from you by March 15, 2019, we will assume your child has permission to participate in this program.
