Seahawk Shells
As Coastal Seahawks, we try to instill in your children the value of being kind, punctual, trustworthy and principled. We also want them to learn the importance of work ethic, taking responsibility for one's actions and fiscal responsibility. As part of our initiative to provide extrinsic worth to these characteristics, we began rewarding students with seashells that are able to be spent for tangible items such as school supplies and non-tangible events such as dress down days and fun activities. From a historical perspective, seashells have been utilized as currency longer and in more places around the world than any other form of money, even gold and silver. Their beauty and uniqueness made them aesthetically pleasing and impossible to counterfeit. They were used for over 4,000 years all over the world, and were still able to be used to make small purchases in Africa as late as the 1950's. At Coastal, your child's shells are actually stamps or signatures inside his or her agenda book. By using this token economy at school, students are given a menu of options for how they earn and spend their currency. Our faculty and staff have worked diligently to accentuate the positive and to foster a sense of pride for doing the right things. We ask our students at the end of every news broadcast if they have earned their shells. To reinforce our efforts and to possibly utilize this system at home, feel free to ask your child to see their agenda book and check out how they are doing in their seashell bank account. We appreciate your support and encouragement as we orchestrate a place where learning is applicable to the real world, and students get to experience a microcosm of our world as we prepare them to be productive citizens in a global marketplace.
