Excellent Leaders Modeling Success
Universal By Design
Lee County Schools offered training in Understanding by Design this summer. This method of designing curriculum fulfills the district goal of providing all students "more than a diploma." The training brought together veteran teachers and rookies for intentional planning of large units that focus on the Big Ideas that students can carry from course to course and grade to grade. Teachers designed units that will help students climb the "magical ladder to the adult world." Unlike past years, this year each teacher developed curriculum units for themselves rather than for publication to a district reservoir of lessons. East Lee teachers from every grade and content attended the training.
"Teachers are amazing designers and ownership of the process improves the product," said Misty Mowrey, one of the teacher facilitators of the training. By concentrating on enduring understandings teachers created units that identify necessary knowledge and skills along with authentic performance tasks to assess those understandings
Communicate for Success
We are excited that students will be using new "larger" agendas at the start of every class. Students will be required to write their homework assignments in their agenda on a daily basis. Using agendas is an AVID organization strategy that we will be using school wide.
The agendas will also be used as a communication tool to parents. Our agendas will aid parents and teachers in identifying behavior and lack of homework patterns that are detrimental to a student’s learning.
Teachers will be given two stamps that will help with communicating to parents about the behaviors taking place in school. If needed, teachers will stamp in red "behavior concern" or stamp blue "missing homework." The 4 by 4 process is still required to track behaviors in the classroom. The third stamp will require teachers to contact a parent or guardian about the concerning behaviors taking place in the classroom.
Students that are given three homework or behavior stamps within a 9 week period will not be able to attend a 9 week celebration. Students that lose their agenda will also not be able to attend the 9 week celebration. Students will be able to purchase a new agenda at the front desk for $5.00.
We believe that early interventions for negative behavior patterns by parents and teachers can help to correct the problem before it escalates into more serious consequences.
The administration and staff of East Lee Middle School are committed to creating a strong partnership with parents in order to establish a positive school environment where all students feel safe and receive every possible opportunity for personal and academic growth.
Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.
