For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - May 2019
The Principal's Corner
As our year begins to wind down and our families begin to look forward to the summer months, I can’t help but to look back and wonder how the year passed us by so quickly. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were welcoming our students back to school? As families make plans for summer activities, we are already busy making plans for next school year.
We are also excited to announce that we have several class sections that are almost full and we anticipate they will be full by the end of the school year, an indication of the positive growth that we are experiencing. We will have a number of year end activities as the year draws to a close. I encourage you to check our calendar regularly to keep abreast of upcoming events.
During the summer months the office will be open during the month of June, Tuesday thru Thursday from 9am until 12pm. The office staff will be on vacation during the first week of July, and the office will resume summer hours on July 9th. Regular business hours of 8am-3pm will resume on August 1st. On behalf of the OLQHS faculty and staff I hope you all have a safe and restful summer.
In Christ,
Trevor Donnelly

Grades 4th-5th follow characters in their book through South America learning dialogs and cultural events by role playing, reading, listening, writing, and speaking....lots of speaking in Spanish. Lots of giggles.
Middle School:
6th grade Enrichment is currently in their Spanish rotation aceing numbers 1-1,000 as well as short conversations in Spanish. This grade will create handmade Piñatas for the other students to enjoy soon.
7th grade Enrichment is proficient in reading and writing for novice high levels in Spanish and are able to maintain short conversations as well as discussing the famous novel, "El Quijote", by Miguel de Cervantes. They also tasted a lesson in Las Tapas from España, Pan con Tomate, by creating their own version of this breakfast meal.
Spanish 1 8th grade has ventured through four different countries while learning and speaking the language achieving intermediate low-high levels of proficiency. They have studied architecture from Puerto Rico, family traditions from Mexico, clothing from Guatemala, and now food from Perú. They did enjoy the fashion show to which each student created and described in Spanish their own traditional garment called "El huipil."

The Art World
Each week Artsonia selects a group of pictures from all the entering schools to be in the running for Artist of the Week. Our own Cami Collin's orange cat was selected to run in the category of Pre-K through 3rd grade and Cami won. She received 690 votes. Cami gets a plague with her name and picture (in the photo) and a $50 gift certificate to buy Art Supplies. The Art Department receives a $100 gift certificate to buy supplies for Art. Great work, Cami, and congratulations!
We have some new Artsonia Hall of Fame winners this month. In Kindergarten we have Anna Kate Downs, Jax Giaimis, and Grant Soileau. Our new 2nd Graders are Emma Bourgeois and Jackson Downs. The new 3rd Grader is Lawton Bordelon and our new 4th Grader is Luca Genius. Congratulations to all!
This month we all finished our Easter projects so there are no new projects yet. Be sure to check Artsonia for all their wonderful Easter Art. Think of Artsonia Gifts for Mother's Day and end of the year. Right now T-Shirts and Jewelry are on sale. A great gift for Mom, grandma, or for your student (particularly for graduating 8th Graders) is to have a portfolio ($29.95) with their artwork throughout the year (or years). It makes a wonderful present to have all their artwork in a beautiful book form.
And now I am going to brag on my wonderful 8th Grade Fine Arts Survey class. These students have done wonderful work all year long with their Illuminated Manuscripts, Scenery and Costuming for their plays, Quilt squares, and finally with Photography. I gave the 8th graders a crash course in GOOD Photography and sent them out on campus to take pictures of the Queen of Heaven campus (on face book) and in teams of two to take portraits of each other. They are fabulous! I am including one shot of each student taken by their peers so you can see the high standard that they achieved. If you would like to see the rest, they are displayed in the Fine Arts Building Hall.
Remember, we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
