In The Know
Black Lives Matter - This next week we are supporting our Black Student Union in hosting a great informational exhibit which brings reverence to Black Lives Matter. This exhibit is not an anti-police effort by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the contrary the exhibit highlights the fact that we have social issues that need to be addressed, such as homelessness, addiction, mental health, etc. We will be sharing components of institutional racism and the guiding principles of Black Lives Matter in the building during the first half of the week. On Thursday and Friday we will be hosting the Black Student Union exhibit which they have been working long and hard on. This exhibit is by invitation. No student is required to attend. Students may opt out and work in the library if their class goes to the exhibit. I encourage a visit as the display is very informational and brings great reverence to understanding the intent behind Black Lives Matter.
Health Impacts Attendance - Health-related absences are a key cause of children missing too much school. A groundbreaking statement on chronic absence released by the American Academy of Pediatrics calls attention to the critical role that pediatricians can play in educating families and communities about how to prevent health-related absences. "The Link Between School Attendance and Good Health" encourages health care providers to promote strong attendance through interactions with patients and their families. Pediatricians can also advocate for policies that help reduce chronic absence in the community, and the state and federal policy levels. Find the policy statement here.

WISE Symposium
WISE Symposium - Meet this year's WISE Symposium keynote Speaker Michelle Massaquoi. She is a fourth year biology graduate student in the Guillemin lab. Her research focuses on understanding how the presence of microbes within the intestine impact the development of the host. She is investigating how a specific protein, secreted by gut bacteria, induces the proliferation of insulin-producing beta cells within the larval zebrafish pancreas. This is Michelle’s third year serving as a UOWGS board member. In her free time she likes to hike, watch football and can be found most mornings running near campus.
All Lane County High School students are invited to REGISTER NOW FOR WISE SYMPOSIUM 2019 coming Thursday, Feb. 28th, 3:30-7:30 p.m.

Kudos
Pathways Assembly - Thank you Casandra for your organization and attention to detail in facilitating this assembly. You have worked long and hard to secure efficient collection of student course requests in order to build a strong master schedule. You know more than any administrator I have ever had the opportunity to work with about master schedule. It shows in the minimization of course conflicts that students do not have to experience.
I would like to recognize the many teachers who stepped up to the plate to support their colleagues as they presented in the Pathways Assembly. Your willingness to volunteer your time is recognized and admired. I appreciate your commitment to support your colleagues.
Katy McAuliffe - There seems to be know limit to your work ethic. Your consistent commitment to Equestrian Team, counseling, scheduling, AP, tour guiding, and about 35 other things makes Churchill a special place to work. Thank you for your career-long commitment to helping everyone who you work with be better at what they do.
Leah Dunbar - You recently took on another student teacher and I know they are in for a very enriching experience. Your ability to make all humans feel welcome and loved creates a climate that we should all strive for. Churchill is very, very lucky to have you on our staff.
From Matt Myers. Thank you to Kevin Summerfield for organizing and then graciously stepping aside to allow Marcos Alvarado and I to chaperone 30 wonderful CHS Latinx students to the U of O on March 31st for the Raza Unida Youth Conference. After spending the day with CHS Latinx students I became acutely aware of how thirsty they are for the opportunity to be among peers. This was an eye-opening experience for me and it has made me a better educator. Kevin...YOU'RE AWESOME!
Congratulations! Football players Marshaun Tucker, DeMontre Thomas, Richard Estrella, and Kimani Quade all signed Letters of Intent to play for the Portland State Vikings next fall. Heading to the University of Oregon is volleyball player Taylor Williams.
Keri Pilgrim Ricker - Is doing an amazing job representing Churchill High School as the Oregon Teacher of the year. Not only has she presented recently at the annual While Child Summit in Portland, but she also presented recently at the CTE and Industry Career Summit. She was the Keynote presentation and she killed it. There were many separate comments after the keynote in separate breakout sessions. Thank Keri for representing Churchill so well. Your professionalism and expectation of excellence is inspiring and contagious.
