May 24, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, and students have 10 days left of the 2022-2023 school year. We are working on keeping students on track, positive, and productive. We will also take some time to celebrate the year as an intermediate school and middle school in the upcoming days. Please stay updated through messages from teachers and our newsletter next week.
With the end of year approaching, the eighth graders are looking forward to next year and the beginning of high school. During a visit to the high school today, they went on a tour, completed a career inventory, and heard from the High School Principal, Mr. Boucher. We are excited to watch them take this next step.
Thanks for helping keep students focused during these final days of the year. We want each student to finish the school year giving their best effort and feeling proud of their work.
Enjoy the long weekend,
Tom Larson
Principal
Action needed: Insurance coverage renewal
Do you or your children have health insurance through Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning Program? If so, please note that your health insurance needs to be renewed. Avoid losing your coverage by being prepared for your renewal.
Here are the steps you need to take to keep your coverage:
- Update your information: Make sure Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning programs have your current contact information. Update your information here or call (800) 657-3672.
- Be on the lookout for a renewal letter in the mail: Watch for official information (mail and text messages) with instructions on when and how to renew coverage.
Why is this necessary?
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Minnesota Department of Human Services paused the renewal process for Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning Program. With the end of the Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Declaration effective May 11, 2023, the Minnesota Department of Human Services must resume renewing membership annually.
Learn more about how to be prepared to renew.
Mark your calendars for TCO's free sport physical event registration date
This summer, Twin Cities Orthopedics is once again offering FREE high school sports physicals at eight different locations. As a partner school, we’re able to give our parents and athletes advanced notice, so you’ll be ready to sign up when registration opens on June 12.
Remember, high school sports physicals are required, and athletes in 7th – 12th grade need one every three years. Learn more.
Reminder from our Nurse
If your child has any medications at school - inhalers, over-the-counter, scheduled and/or emergency medications, they will be sent home on the last day of school with your child, unless other arrangements are made with the health office. No meds can be kept at school over the summer.
Also, please remember to check your child's immunizations this summer so they are ready for back to school in September. For any questions, please call our health office at 763-600-5304.
Celebrating our 2022-2023 retirees
Congratulations to our staff members who were honored and recognized at last week's retirement event. As a learning community, we gather to recognize their tremendous contributions to our schools and community. We thank each of the retirees for their tremendous commitment to the students of Spring Lake Park Schools and wish them well in their retirement!
Read here as they share any words they wanted to convey to our community about their journey and plans for the future.

Leo Parkin, Gulf War Veteran, presents to students
Red Team students had the opportunities to hear first-hand accounts of Leo Parkin's (Westwood's Custodian) experiences in the Air Force during the first Gulf War. Leo is a beloved custodian at WW and students were eager to hear about his life outside of the school. Leo answered questions about basic training, the process of shipping out/going to war, his duties and experience as a mechanic working on airplanes for the Air Force, and a variety of other topics.
Mileage Club Update!
We are half-way done with 2023 Mileage Club. Over 450 students/staff in 5/6 grades have participated. They have logged in over 1700 miles, which is equivalent to walking to Las Vegas from Spring Lake Park. There is still time to volunteer and see the program in action. It is fun and easy to scan cards and give out prizes. One hour shifts are available between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Please sign up in the Mileage Club BAND.
