Literacy Coach Corner - Games to Build Word Knowledge and Familiarity
One thing my students know about me is that I love board games. Over the years, I’ve built up a collection of games that build word knowledge and are just fun to play. Here are my favorites:
Bananagrams: This fast-paced game is best described as free-form Scrabble and can be played just about anywhere!
Apples to Apples: This word-association game is fun and can also be purchased in a travel-size version (which I prefer when I have limited space in a classroom)
Once Upon a Time: In this card game for two to six players, you work with a group to tell a story based on the cards you have. This was given to me as a gift from a former student and it was so much fun to play as a group during lunch!
Codewords: One of my favorite word-association games that comes in many varieties, such as Disney Family Edition, or Duets for two players! It also has a lot of appeal for adults and high school students.Younger players may find it pretty challenging.
