SCSOS Community Update
March 2023
A Message from Superintendent Reusser
We are so excited to announce classes have officially started for our brand new Cosmetology School here in Yuba City! We have eight wonderful students who are eager to learn about skincare, nail services, how to cut, color and style hair, and more! Our Cosmetology course is unique and highly competitive with Sacramento Area programs. Students not only learn the basics of the industry, but they also earn clinical credits alongside book work. By doing this, students will complete the course within nine months, compared to some programs that can take over a year to complete. Upon graduating, students will have all the skills needed to pass the California Licensing Exam and find employment within our community.
We still continue to offer our Medical Assistant courses as well. The program continues to grow and thrive. Sixty two of our 2022 graduating students have either found full time employment or continued their education in medicine.
We are so proud of our team and their efforts in creating and expanding programs. Sutter County Superintendent of Schools strives to make the lives of our students and community members better every day.
Cosmetology School Update
The first session of our Cosmetology School began on Monday, February 6, 2023 with eight students enrolled. We are looking forward to more students enrolling for upcoming sessions.
Snow at Shady Creek!
A Message from Shady Creek Director Christopher Little
“Look at everything as though you are seeing it for the first time, with eyes of a child, fresh with wonder.” – Joseph Cornell (Woodleaf Naturalist Alumni)
The past few weeks at Shady Creek have been eventful to say the least! We haven’t experienced snow on campus like this since the big move from Woodleaf 15 years ago. It’s an experience unlike any other. Snow fall can be so magical – The flip side is, snowfall can also lead any human to a level of pure misery if not prepared correctly. Traditionally in years past, we will receive a day or two of snow at Shady Creek across the entire year. But this year has proved to be anything but traditional. Two weeks ago we were fortunate to serve Tierra Buena, Andros Karperos and Lincoln schools out of Yuba City. Last week we had the opportunity to serve Shasta and Emma Wilson from Chico. These students were SO EXCITED to experience real snow falling! They were shouting and smiling as the snow started to fall all over campus. It was super precious. It really is a priceless moment to witness the expressions of pure joy, it’s something that children have no problem showing. The following week was met with even more snow. So much snow that it set us up for the craziest Friday departure I have ever experienced. Being from Sacramento, I really do pride myself that even though I may seem like a mountain man, at heart I am a true city kid. I am not a fan of snow at all! Watching these Chico students play in the snow on Thursday and Friday filled my heart, but in the back of my mind I knew that eventually we had to find the safest solution to return them home. At this point I’d like to thank the parents, the bus drivers, teachers, administrators and of course my staff at Shady Creek for the most epic Friday of my career – Everyone was taken care of, everyone returned safe and everyone had fun!
