BHMS Principal's Update 10/30/21
Harvest Dance and Halloween Festivities
Keeping Up with What is Going on at the Hill!!!
The last two days at Bunker Hill Middle School have been filled with joy and a sense of moving back to what makes BHMS more of a cohesive group of students and faculty. Truth be told, these last few months have been nothing short of complicated: Wearing of masks, quarantine protocols, room closures, and recalibrating for students what it means to be a buildog have posed challenges as we try our best to support students and their social/emotional growth.
We, like many other schools, are faced with students trying to reacclimate themselves to full day instruction, engage in postive peer interactions, and maintain an academic focus. I want you to know your children are working hard to navigate this world. Our 8th graders have never had a true middle school experience and our 6th and 7th graders are full time in this building for the very first time. It takes an adjustment on everyone's part. It was great for these last two days to see us move to some semblance of normalcy as we had students wear very cool Halloween costumes, where a group of students participated in special education and general education inclusion activities, and where we have begun to have fun again. With our beginning of the year outdoor parties and our current dance last night, it was great to see our Bulldogs enjoy being kids again.
We are committed to staying on this journey with your children and continuing to remind them about being a Bulldog and giving them the most opportunities we can to help them feel connected to their middle school and their middle school experience. We wish every family a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
Sincerely,
Mike D'Ostilio

Reminders about Protocols Updated 10/30/21
Lastly, vetted at the district Health and Safety Subcommittee of the district's Coronavirus Task Force was a change, especially at the middle level. As long as we remain in the Green or Yellow Status Levels for COVID-19 in our region, we will begin having students use the locker rooms to change for PE. This will allow for students to be able to fully particate in PE under the following provisions:
- Regular PE can only resume when we are in the green or yellow phase. If the CALI scores take us back to orange or above, we will suspend changing until it returns to yellow.
- Locker assignments will attempt to spread children out as much as possible while in the locker room. We should not be assigning a bank of lockers in numerical order so we can avoid having kids on top of one another while changing. We must attempt, as best as possible to try to keep them 3 feet apart. This will help reduce close contacts.
- Mask must be worn at all times in the locker rooms while changing.
- Students will be able to use the restrooms in the locker rooms instead of having to leave the gym to use the restroom in the hall.

We are committed to providing a safe environment where students can express themselves as they question the ebb and flow of their world around them.
