About PKU
PKU is a rare autosomal recessive disease that is caused by a the liver not functioning properly and allowing high levels of phenylalanine which is harmful to Brain structure and function.

An example of what people are trying to do to treat this disorder is that after birth you are screened for PKU and if it is caught within the first 4 weeks it reduces the chances of developing mental retardation by 75%.
