Thanksgiving Edition

"Feeling Grateful and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it."

- William Arthur Ward -

We all have much to be thankful for at GDRHS. Although the grind of the school year can be stressful and tiring for students, staff, and parents we are very fortunate to live in communities that have been very supportive of education. We have a safe place in which we can teach and learn and we succeed at high levels as a result of the many gifts provided to us.

Thanks to all staff, students, and families that make GDRHS such a special place.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Colonel's Cup is up for grabs on Thursday!

Big picture
In my opinion, there is no better way to start a holiday than with some high school football. The tradition of playing high school football is common in Massachusetts but is rare in other areas of the country. Win or lose, I am always thankful on this day each year for the many life lessons that the game of football and the coaches I had taught me.

I am honored to have been a part of each and every Thanksgiving Day Football game ever played between GDRHS and Tyngsborough High School. I was the Head Football Coach at Tyngsborough High School during the first ever contest between the schools in 2008, a game won by G-D on a very muddy field in Groton. The following year, Tyngsborough won the cup back in what was my final game as a coach, 25-24. For the past two years the Cup has been "On Loan" from our trophy case. Today I received a friendly taunt from my old friends in Tyngsborough. (see the picture above)

The trophy is named in honor of the founders of the communities involved, Colonel Tyng and Colonel Prescott. With your support, I hope our boys can bring the cup back home on Thursday.

Game time is at 10:00am at Tyngsborough High School.

Camp Sunshine

The Camp Sunshine Application for 2020 is now available! Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. This camp supports families who have children in various stages of the illness. Its mission is to provide a retreat for the entire family – the ill child, the parents and the siblings. This program is free for the families and is staffed by thousands of volunteers each year. Camp Sunshine is located in Casco, Maine.

We will be running two different trips to Camp Sunshine in 2020, one in February and one in August.

Please be aware that students must be 16 at the time of the trip. Additionally, seniors are not eligible to travel on the August trip.

Applications must be turned in by 2 PM on Friday, December 6, 2019. Applications should be given to Ms. Pratt in room 106. Applications can be found outside room 106. More information regarding the trip can be found in the application.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email Ms. Pratt at kpratt@gdrsd.org.

Give Kids the World 2020 Information Meeting

Thursday, Dec. 5th, 2pm

GDRHS Library

We will have a meeting for any students interested in learning more about the opportunity to participate in our annual Give Kids the World Service Trip taking place next November. Please RSVP if interested in attending. This meeting is open to students and/or parents.

RSVPs are enabled for this event.

2nd Annual Give Kids the World Service Trip a Hugh Success

Twenty-one students and staff recently returned from spending four days working at Give Kids the World Village located in Kissimmee, Florida. Their service helped make it possible for hundreds of families who have a child suffering from a potential life threatening condition to enjoy a week's vacation and enjoy their time at the GKTW resort and the surrounding Orlando attractions. Our GD group served food, bussed tables, hosted a Candy Land themed party and spent many more selfless hours doing whatever they could to make these vacations special. I am so proud of this group and look forward to many more years of GD students and staff participating in this experience.

"Ever since last year when I first heard about Give Kids The World Village I knew it was a trip I wanted to go on and I was really excited when I found out it was a trip the school was continuing. This trip was truly inspirational and eye-opening and something I’ll remember forever. I hope to come back soon and volunteer with my family. I recommend this trip to anyone who wants to be part of something bigger than themselves."

From the Health Office

Dear Parents/Guardians of 10th Grade Students,

We will conduct state-mandated vision and hearing screenings for all 10th grade students on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

School-based vision and hearing screenings are intended to help identify common vision and hearing problems and do not serve as a replacement for regular comprehensive examinations by a doctor. If your child requires additional evaluation based on the results of the screening you will be notified in writing by the nurse.

If you would like your child excluded from the screening please submit a written request to the school nurse by December 2, 2019.

Please contact the school nurse, Cheryl Shea @ 978-448-6362 ext. 1018 or cshea@gdrsd.org if you have any questions.

Parent Volunteers Needed

This year we are beginning preparations for our decennial accreditation visit conducted by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). As part of this process we will be conducting and writing a self-reflection. You may remember requests to fill out a parent survey earlier this year. We are looking for a few parent volunteers to participate in this process by contributing to some of the work our staff is doing on this. If you would be interested in participating, please email Mike Woodlock. mwoodlock@gdrsd.org
