Volume 2, Issue 32 - April 5, 2019
Dear Families,
As we approach the last months of school, with the warmer weather, and MAP testing in full swing, our goal is to keep focus on learning and helping all students successfully finish the semester. There is a lot of instruction left and learning occurs throughout the class (bell to bell).
Students are expected to be in their classrooms before the last bell. Students who do not have a pass are considered tardy to class. First period starts at 7:30 and students must be in their classrooms at that time. Parents will be notified and students may receive consequences if they demonstrate persistent tardy behaviors.
Thank you for all your support as we focus on instruction!

April Is School Library Month!
MAP Testing Begins
As always, students will not be permitted to have ANY electronic devices with them during testing (cell phones, iPads, iPods, digital or smart watches, Fitbits, AirPods, blue tooth head phones, etc.). Please be sure that your student has a working knowledge of their locker and combination so that they can secure these devices at the beginning of each day. Food and beverage will also NOT be permitted during testing.
It is recommended that students bring a book to read in the event that they complete their test material early. These same instructions will be presented at our MAP/PEP assembly on Friday.

Day of Silence
Next Friday, April 12th, is a Day of Silence for members and allies of the LGBTQ Community. Started in 1996, the day is now organized by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). According to their website - “The GLSEN Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.”
Students who choose to participate will be informed that they “have a right to participate in Day of Silence and other expressions of your opinion at a public school during non-instructional time: the breaks between classes, before and after the school day, lunchtime, and any other free times during your day. You do NOT have a right to remain silent during class time if a teacher asks you to speak.” (GLSEN)
Why is this so important?
From GLSEN: “The GLSEN 2013 National School Climate Survey found that nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. Moreover, two of the top three reasons students said their peers were most often bullied at school were actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender expression, according to From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America, a 2005 report by GLSEN and Harris Interactive. Thus, the Day of Silence helps bring us closer to making anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in U.S. schools.”
