Maire newsletter: January 29 Edition

Dear Maire Families,

Our specials staff has returned this week and students have thoroughly enjoyed getting specials in person. Not only is this an opportunity for students to excel in more than academics, it is also more teachers to make a connection with. Each specials teacher is one more person to look after our Maire Bears and build a relationship that will span many years to come. We welcome back Ms. Kefgen, Mr. Hipple, Mr. Heenan, Mrs. Hermon and Ms. Zamudio. New this year is Ms. Stephanie Waters, librarian, and Mrs. Jennifer Legault, our librarian assistant.

Getting specials up and running smoothly takes time. This change to our schedule, along with changes in the day in general due to COVID, have provided some challenges. Schedules have been tweaked. Safety protocols have been established. Adjusting our teaching, our instruction, our protocols, and plans are all things that we continue to work on. Flexibility and grace are appreciated as we navigate this new change. Also note, while the consistency of seeing each teacher is a bit off due to our hybrid rotation and an ABCD specials calendar, our specials team is dedicated to making each class impactful with academics, social, and emotional growth. We will keep working hard on these plans.

With each change our staff and students have responded with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude. While more changes may be on the horizon, we will tackle each with that same energy. Throughout this year, safety has been the focus of all of our protocols and procedures. That will always be on the forefront as we follow the next set of expectations. I know our community is on all different ends of the spectrum on what direction to go, and there is no easy answer, but know Maire will always do everything in our power to make things the safest they can be given our circumstances.

Important notes from the Office

  • Please initial ALL clothing so that if anything is lost, we can find the proper owner.
  • Students go out for recess twice a day, so make certain they have appropriate winter clothing for the day. Winter hat, mittens, snow pants, and boots are all important items to pack each day. BE DRESSED FOR THE WEATHER EVERY DAY!
  • Please use our QR code (located in the vestibule) if you need to pick up a student early or drop off late. This helps us to keep track of the students while maintaining a safe distance for our parents and office staff.

Earth Day Poster Contest

For years Maire has been an Evergreen School in Michigan. That means that we try our best to make decisions here to reduce any waste of our natural resources. Earth Day fits right into our thinking and our state is having a poster contest to celebrate it. All details can be found here.

The submission sheet is on an 8 1/2" x 14" legal size piece of official paper that Mr. Heenan will have available in the art room (or you can download it here) . Please return submissions to Mr. Heenan or your homeroom teacher.

Submissions are due to Maire by Wednesday, February 10th, so we can pick "Maire Winners" by grade to be sent on for the state competition.

Bookmark Contest!

The library will once again this year be having a bookmark contest! With only a few minor tweaks, Mrs. Hermon is making this yearly event happen. You can watch this video explaining how the whole thing will work.

The deadline for both Cohort A & Cohort B is Friday, February 12th. We can't wait to see your designs!

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT: PTO IS HOSTING VIRTUAL ASSEMBLIES ON STUDENTS NON FACE-TO-FACE DAYS

Our amazing PTO has arranged for several assemblies in the coming months for students to do on their NON FACE-TO-FACE days! They will happen two days in a row to ensure both cohorts get the opportunity. These virtual assemblies will be both fun and educational. A Maire staff member will always be in attendance as well to assist.

We will advertise each assembly on our newsletters, Maire PTO Facebook page, and teachers will include them on their schoology pages. We hope this organized event on non face-to-face days will be a welcomed addition.

Below is the flyer for our first assembly, a Virtual Rainforest Assembly. The link for the zoom will be shared out in multiple ways closer to the event. Mark those calendars now to save the date and time !

Maire is so grateful for the generous support we have received this school year! We are especially thankful for the financial support from our local business. This has been a tough year on businesses and our supporters could use our support. Please keep these places in mind when shopping!

Makerspace Zoom Thursday and Friday

The virtual Maire Makerspace Class will be happening every Thursday & Friday!

This is an optional zoom class led by Mrs. Kramer.

At the meeting students will design, tinker, and create something based on the design challenge (details will be sent out each Monday). This is a fun way to engage with other students and showcase your creativity and problem-solving skills.

Each week students will be given a list of household supplies to gather & bring to the zoom meeting. If you are not able to gather all of the materials, we will have some kits created plus a bin of extra single supplies available in our vestibule for you to pick up.

Our Maire Makerspace Class zooms will be for all students (Y5-4th) from 10:00 - 10:25 on Thursday (Cohort B) and 10:00 - 10:25 on Friday (Cohort A).

Please consider joining this optional Makerspace zoom on your asynchronous mornings. You can access the zoom via the link below and teachers will try to post it in their Schoology accounts as well. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/11AtCskBmt_f-hHoQFyGHWwxk3jo3kAyuqVYfBqJwOUE/edit#slide=id.gaff7c6fcdf_0_22

GPPSS meal distribution at GP North and GP South

Free meals distributed Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

From 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. every Wednesday, families can pick up a week’s worth of meals for students under age 18 or those receiving special education services under age 26. Simply drive through at North High School or South High School. In order to keep this as safe as possible for everyone, these meals will be served as “grab and goes” to be taken home for consumption. Free lunch will be served at all schools for students who order when attending in person. Free breakfast will be served at Defer, Mason, Monteith, Parcells, Pierce, North and South when students attend school in person. This is made possible through an extension of the USDA grant.
