Principal's Corner
Can you believe October has come to an end? Last month we celebrated Red Ribbon Week and Bully Prevention. I read Bully B.E.A.N.S. by Julia Cook on the Morning Show. In the story, classmates learned how to take away Bobbette's bullying power. Our scholars are preventing bullying by spreading kindness and learning how to solve minor problems.
November is upon us and there is much to be grateful for at Saunders! I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all who make Saunders a great place to thrive and learn. The Spartan community is ensuring our future is bright for our nearly 758 scholars. We will be celebrating American Education Week November 13-17th. The week will kick-off with a PTA General Meeting and Career Expo, Monday, November 13th from 6-7 p.m. Parents, if you would like to share your career, please contact your child's teacher.
Thank you for your partnership! Together we can achieve the extraordinary!
From our school Counselor Mrs. Carter
Dear Parents:
Conflict or disagreement is normal and often happens when children get together. However, hurtful words, gestures, or physical attack are unacceptable ways to deal with conflict and disagreement at school.
Our goal at Saunders is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult situations. To do this, we are asking students who have minor problems to try at least two of the following ideas:
1. Go to another game or activity.
2. Share and take turns.
3. Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other.
4. Walk away from the problem.
5. Ignore the problem behavior.
6. Tell the person to stop the problem behavior.
7. Apologize.
8. Make a deal or compromise.
9. Wait to cool off.
By using this plan, we believe that our students will develop effective problem-solving skills that they can use again and again. It will help them to deal with conflict in a positive manner and to make appropriate decisions. Knowing what to do will help students reduce the stress and number of conflicts they have at school and in their neighborhood.
These concepts have been introduced to the students through counseling lessons in October and will continue throughout the school year. We encourage you to become familiar with this program and use it in your home. By working together, we can develop a healthy life skill for young people to use at home and at school.

Fifth grade Spartan Scholars investigate in an outdoor classroom!
Mrs. Marushia’s Spartan Scholars enjoyed testing their weather tools outside on Friday, October 20th. Students were testing the wind speed using their anemometers, they also tested temperature by placing thermometers in a light colored envelope and a dark colored one. They discovered that the dark envelope absorbs more heat than the other. They also had the opportunity to learn more about coding online during our Spartan scholars' block.
Fourth Grade visits Jamestown
4th Grade Marvels have enjoyed learning about Virginia’s geography and the First Americans who lived here. To further our learning, our fantastic Marvels have also enjoyed an exciting and informative field trip to Yorktown American Revolutionary Museum and participated in an outreach program from Jamestown.
Fifth Grade Field Trip to the Mariners Museum
The 5th grade Spartans have completed many exciting learning experiences this nine weeks. Not only have they learned to work collaboratively to complete math investigations, they have also completed scientific investigations involving weather and other fun items. They completed an engineering design challenge creating cargo ships from foil. Our representatives for the district-wide competition are Micheal from rm 35 and Jayden from rm 38.
We also just experienced how Hurricanes are created and how homes are affected at the Mariner's Museum. We look forward to having another great Science experience at the Virginia Air and Space Center. The students are also engaged in a novel study of Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. They are learning many reading and writing skills from this novel including summarizing, problem and solution, and characterization, just to name a few.
Introducing our Odyssey of the Mind Team facilitated by Ms. Beier
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving team. Each team may have no more than seven students. Thank you to the many excellent students who tried out. Please join us in congratulating and supporting these seven students: Maddie Weser, Enrique Burgos-Cueva, Verdelle Rankins, Alexis Byrd, Bryanna Zapien, and Alyssa Pitt as they prepare to compete in a challenging tournament in March. Here they are defining teamwork! They’re off to a great start!
