General School Information
At 7:40 a.m., students must be seated in their Period 1/HR Class. Students should arrive at school by 7:30 a.m. each morning.
Parents are Reminded
IN THE MORNING, PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF YOUR CHILD IN THE MAIN PARKING LOT--YOU MUST STAY IN LINE ON THE ROADWAY TO THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.
Please pull up to the last cone in front of the school when you are dropping off your student(s) in the morning. The last cone in front of the building is adjacent to the Media Center. This helps to move more cars quickly through the line in front of the school when dropping off students. You should see Mrs. Sebastian on the sidewalk by the front door waving to parents to move up.
Reminder About Cell Phones
In a classroom setting, a cell phone may only be used with a teacher’s permission. Otherwise, it is prohibited in a teaching and learning environment. Students may only use their cell phones before school, after school, during lunch, and during passing time.
Lunch Balances
Some students are racking up large negative lunch balances with Sodexo. Just a reminder that students will not be able to purchase food in the cafeteria if their current lunch balance is $25 or higher.
Parents can pay via cash, check (made out to Sodexo), money order, or through myschoolbucks. If you think you were eligible for free and reduced lunch, please go directly to this website: https://www.florence.k12.nj.us/cafeteria. You will see there what it is that you need to do to complete a free and reduced lunch application.
If you already completed an application and don't understand why you aren't already considered free and reduced, you should contact the Business Office: (609) 499-4600, Extension 1006.

Special Recognition: Academic Achievement & Principal's List Programs
Academic Achievement Program
This is a wonderful program! We will once again be challenging our students to settle for nothing less than their best. We want to see our students succeed, and we will be communicating to them that we want them to set their sights on earning a GPA of at least a 3.0 (a “B” average) with no “D” or “F” grades in any course for each marking period of the school year. Please join us in challenging your child to be content with nothing less than his or her best effort!
Principal's List Program
Each marking period, students who earn A's in all of their courses will be assigned to the "Principal's Academic List." We've added this program based upon the feedback we received from students, staff and parents. We have students who are hungry to show what they can do, and we're eager to recognize them!
Four qualifying students--one from each grade level--will be randomly selected to receive a $25 Wawa gift card from our Parent Organization.

CHARACTER EDUCATION
April Character Trait
"Honesty and Trustworthiness"
“I am honest to myself and to others, I try to present myself and my reactions accurately to each person, and I take responsibility for my actions.”
WHAT IS HONESTY?
When you are honest, you speak the truth. More broadly, you present yourself in a genuine and sincere way, without pretense, and taking responsibility for your feelings and actions. You are a person of integrity — you are who you say you are — and you act consistently across the domains of your life rather than being one way in the community and a completely different way in your family. As a result, you believe you are being consistently true to yourself. Honesty allows people to take responsibility for their feelings and behaviors, owning them, and reaping benefits by doing so.
Cannabis (Marijuana) Research Report
What are marijuana's long-term effects on the brain?
Substantial evidence from animal research and a growing number of studies in humans indicate that marijuana exposure during development can cause long-term or possibly permanent adverse changes in the brain. Rats exposed to THC before birth, soon after birth, or during adolescence show notable problems with specific learning and memory tasks later in life. 32–34 Cognitive impairments in adult rats exposed to THC during adolescence are associated with structural and functional changes in the hippocampus. 35–37 Studies in rats also show that adolescent exposure to THC is associated with an altered reward system, increasing the likelihood that an animal will self-administer other drugs (e.g., heroin) when given an opportunity (see "Is marijuana a gateway drug?").
Imaging studies of marijuana’s impact on brain structure in humans have shown conflicting results. Some studies suggest regular marijuana use in adolescence is associated with altered connectivity and reduced volume of specific brain regions involved in a broad range of executive functions such as memory, learning, and impulse control compared to people who do not use.38,39 Other studies have not found significant structural differences between the brains of people who do and do not use the drug. -Click to read more

No Place for Hate Club
NPFH created a Ramadan banner to show our Islamic community members that we support them during Ramadan. Ramadan is a challenging time for many of our students as they fast from midnight to midnight each day for a month between the dates of March 23-April 21.
One main reason for the fast is to honor those less fortunate than we are. The students learned to recognize that although a person may not be Islamic, they can still align with the positive message of a religion not their own. Ramadan Mubarak!

Students were asked to dress in special attire to foster unity and inclusion throughout the school. In addition, students "rocked their socks" on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day. FHS students were encouraged to wear bright and colorful socks to support students with Down Syndrome. People who have Down Syndrome have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome while most people have two! Therefore, 3/21 is the perfect day to celebrate each year! Chromosomes look like socks, so wearing a unique pair of socks is the perfect way to spend the day!
Autism Awareness
Student Council members are also planning special events in April to highlight autism awareness.
Used Prom Dresses & Accessories
Student Council is also currently sponsoring a drive to collect prom dresses, jewelry, and dress shoes. We will also accept men's suits and dress shoes. All donations should be dropped off at the high school main office by April 21, 2023.

Allergies & Colds...
From Mayo Clinic..
If you tend to get "colds" that start suddenly and happen at the same time every year, it's possible that you actually have seasonal allergies. Although colds and seasonal allergies may share some of the same symptoms, they are very different diseases.
Common colds are caused by viruses. Seasonal allergies, however, are immune system responses triggered by exposure to allergens, such as a seasonal tree or grass pollens.
You can treat a common cold with rest, pain relievers, and cold remedies, such as decongestants. A cold often lasts 5-7 days in adults, although some may last as long as two or three weeks.
You can treat seasonal allergies with antihistamines, nasal steroid sprays, and decongestants. Avoid exposure to allergens where possible. Seasonal allergies may last several weeks.
