Onwards and Upwards Class of 2021
Feature Story of the Month
Anginell Anderson on High Expectations
Mrs. Farrah Smock, PHJH Principal, shares that Aginell asks students to practice and practice until they can show that they have at least an 80% mastery of the content. As a result of her high expectations, 72.5% of her Emergent Bilingual students "met approaches" in last year's STAAR Science!
"Anginell deserves a celebration. Considering she has one of the highest number of EB students among 8th-grade classes in the district, her students' outcomes were a testament to how she pushed all her students," Elsa Barrientos, Secondary Science Specialist, commented.

Campus Spotlight
Regina Young -Watkins, an IC at Apollo JH who facilitated the SK12 Progress Monitoring implementation on her campus, shares it is eye-opening that EB students really need to have a truthful conversation about the need to do their best in demonstrating their language proficiency on TELPAS. "Some of them need to hear the hard truth that they can not just simply click around. Some of them do not know that they are still in the ESL program and they can exit the program if they do their best," said Regina.
Secondary LAT Shout Out: Mieka Bean
Mieka Bean has received an award as the J.J. Pearce High School District Support Employee of the Month to celebrate her dedication to support the school's SummitK12 implementation.
An excerpt from a campus' staff email:
"Your positive energy and calming personality are a perfect match for our campus... I see your dedication and commitment every time you set foot on campus, and I thank you so very much."
Meet Juan Rodriguez, an 8th Grade student at Lake Highlands JH. This is his second year in the US schools, and he is writing a narrative text. Applying the workshop model to instruction, his teacher, Ms. Svetlana Vilig, worked with the class in modeling and giving the students the opportunity to go through the prewriting and drafting processes.
Way to go Juan! Keep up the good work!
And of course, way to go, LHJH, for continuously providing grade level access to the curriculum to all your students, including EBs who are in sheltered RLA classes.
