From the Office of the Superintendent: New Year, New Newsletter

Dear Abington School District Community,

I hope your 2019 is off to a positive start. A new year is always a great time to reflect on the past 12 months and plan for what is ahead, including setting goals of what one might aim to accomplish in the coming year.

While 2018 marked the accomplishment of a professional goal of mine when I was appointed Superintendent of Schools, I am using the new year as an opportunity to meet one of the goals I had outlined in my 90-day Entry Plan. At the Meet and Greet in September, I discussed wanting to strengthen the District's overall communications practices—including how our community receives information and the frequency of communication.

One means of accomplishing this goal is through our new digital communication, ASD Highlights & Happenings. Included you will find highlights from some of the latest District events and accomplishments, in addition to news updates and a list of key upcoming dates. Our current plan is to send this digital newsletter to the Abington School District community quarterly. With more than 8,300 K-12 students, and over 1,300 dedicated school employees, we have much to share and celebrate.

It is my goal not just in 2019, but for the duration of my superintendency, to elevate our communications with you. As always, if you have any questions or feedback you would like to share, I can be reached at

Jeffrey S. Fecher, Ed.D.

Construction Corner: Let the Digging Begin!

On November 2, 2018, the Abington Senior High School Additions and Renovations Project, which includes the construction of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Center for Science and Technology, officially kicked off with a groundbreaking event. Following meetings with construction managers to finalize logistics, the construction zone was fenced off, equipment and machinery were delivered, and the project is now underway. Read more about the overall project here.

2019-2020 Budget Process Underway

The Board of School Directors of the Abington School District is now in the process of determining the budget for the 2019-2020 school year. At the January 8 meeting of the Board of School Directors, an orientation outlined the projected enrollment and staffing for next year, as well as total expenditures and revenue for the proposed 2019-2020 Preliminary General Fund Budget. The orientation provided estimates based upon forecasted revenue and expenses. With student enrollment predicted to grow districtwide by more than 200 students, the orientation demonstrated potential staffing increases that might be needed, based on the enrollment growth seen in many of the nine schools—a trend that has been recurring over the past few years. The 2019-2020 Preliminary General Fund Budget was approved by the Board on February 5, and the Board elected to not increase the tax rate above the Index. The 2019-2020 Final Budget will be voted on for approval at the June 11 meeting. For access to Board meeting materials, including budget orientations, visit BoardDocs, which you can also find linked on the ASD website.

Introducing the Teaching and Learning Department

In order to better reflect the scope of the staff's responsibilities, the Curriculum Department has been renamed the Teaching and Learning Department. Further, three new team members have joined the department, as approved by the Board of School Directors late last year. Dr. Toni Butz comes to ASD as the Director of Teaching and Learning from the North Penn School District, where she previously was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Kelly Murray, who previously worked as an Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning (K-12) and an Elementary Assistant Principal in the Radnor Township School District, will serve as Assistant Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning. In addition, Dr. Stephanie Viola, outgoing Principal of Copper Beech Elementary School, will join the department as the Assistant Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning, once a transition plan is implemented for her current position.

Welcome to the New Principal of Copper Beech Elementary School: Ms. Fatima Rogers

The Board of School Directors of the Abington School District approved the hiring of Ms. Fatima Rogers as Principal of Copper Beech Elementary School, following a recommendation by Dr. Fecher, at the February 5, 2019, School Board meeting. She will lead the District’s largest K-6 elementary school full-time beginning on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Ms. Rogers, who has more than 20 years of experience, joins Abington School District from The School District of Philadelphia, where she served as a principal for the past 10 years, most recently as Principal of Charles W. Henry Elementary School in West Mount Airy. Previously, she worked for the William Penn School District.

Before taking the reins in April, Ms. Rogers attended an introductory morning meeting with staff, and will be introduced to students during the school day on Monday, March 4, 2019. That evening, a special “Meet the New Principal” event for Copper Beech families will be held at the school, starting at 6:00 p.m.
