HSE Attendance
INFORMATION ABOUT TARDIES, EXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED ABSENSES.
I would like to inform everyone about our attendance policies. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you may have at cacostaguillen@harmonytx.org.
TARDY POLICY
Tardiness interrupts instructional time. Students should be inside the classroom by the school’s announced start time. If a student is more than 20 minutes late to class, he/she will be counted absent for the period. A student arriving after this must first report to the front office and obtain a tardy slip. Tardiness to school will be unexcused unless the student comes late to campus for one of the following reasons:
- Attendance at a required court appointment.
- Appointment with a doctor, dentist, or other professional (Must have the excuse note).
- Inclement Weather (Principal’s approval needed).
Any other reasons need to be discussed with the attendance clerk.
If your student arrives after 8:43 AM a parent must come into the front office and sign in their student.
UNEXCUSED ABSENSES
Examples of unexcused absences include, but are not limited to:
- Vacation
- Personal day
- Family events
EXCUSED ABSENSES
ALL excuse notes must be turned in to the front office within three days of the student's absence otherwise the absence will stay unexcused.
An absence will be considered excused if the reason for the absence is for one or more of the following reasons:
- Personal illnesses that do not exceed three consecutive days. Illnesses that extend beyond three days will require a doctor’s note
- Documented healthcare appointments.
- Family emergency or illness. (Principal’s approval needed).
- Quarantine of the home. (Medical note needed)
- Bereavement of a family member. **
- Observing religious holy days.
- Appearing at a governmental office to complete the paperwork required concerning the student’s application for United States citizenship.
- The mandatory screening, diagnosis, and treatment for Medicaid-eligible students.
Any other reasons need to be discussed with the attendance clerk.
**Number of days allowed is at the discretion of the Principal
Signing out your student for early leave? We also need written documentation to excuse the classes that are being missed. Same rules apply to determine if your student will be excused or unexcused.
- All absences will be reviewed, with consideration given to special circumstances discussed in the Texas Education Code. For a student transferring into Harmony Public Schools after school begins, including a migrant student, only those absences after enrollment will be considered.
- In reaching a consensus about a student’s absences, the committee will attempt to ensure that its decision is in the best interest of the student.
- The committee will consider whether the absences were for reasons over which the student or parent could exercise control.
- The committee will consider the acceptability and the authenticity of documentation expressing reasons for the student's absences.
- The committee will consider the extent to which the student has completed all assignments, mastered the essential knowledge and skills, and maintained passing grades in the course or subject.
- The student, parent, or other representatives will be given an opportunity to present any information to the committee about the absences and to discuss ways to earn or regain credit.
