Movie Poster Project

Tutorial videos for Comic Life / Photoshop Elements 8

Video #1 - Create a movie poster with Comic Life

In this video, a movie poster about "The Raven" is begun using Comic Life. The author wants to insert an image of a raven flying toward a small house. However, the perfect raven image is part of another picture. Video #2 shows how to isolate the raven from the image.

Video #2 - Isolate part of an image using Photoshop Elements 8 & Magic Wand

In this video, the author uses Photoshop Elements 8 to first select, and then extract, the raven from the rest of the image. The primary tool used is the Magic Wand Tool which analyzes your image and looks for similar colours and brightnesses in order to select a part of an image that you want.

(Another tool, not discussed but worth experimenting with, is the Magnetic Lasso Tool which can be useful but also frustrating as it sometimes leads to unwanted results.)

Video #3 - Insert new PSE8 image into Comic Life poster project

In this video, the isolated raven from Video #2 is inserted into the movie poster being made in Comic Life that was started in Video #1.

Video #4 - Isolating part of a 'trickier' image using Photoshop Elements 8

The raven in the image in Video #2 was fairly easy to isolate because the background was simple. What if the raven you wanted is part of an image where the background is more complex? In this video, the author demonstrates another technique to manually separate the part of the image you want by first tracing the area you wish to capture and then using the technique from Video #2.

(Another tool, not discussed but worth trying out with your image, is the Magnetic Lasso Tool which can be quite useful but also frustrating as it sometimes difficult to control the mouse when tracing around the boundary of the area you want to select.)
