Principal's Message
Dear GUFS Families,
We want to thank all parents for partnering with us to ensure our students are making good decisions with their social media usage. Mr. Sammartano put out a notice about the Tik-Tok challenge that has been circulating around middle school aged children. We will continue to be vigilant on our end in school with educating our students with appropriate use of technology. Mr. Sammartano will be scheduling a parent evening soon in order to partner with families to continue this important work.
As we enter the fall season with October upon us, our educational programs are becoming more challenging and rigorous. We hope you enjoy viewing some of the pictures that reflect the teaching and learning that is happening at GUFS.
Enjoy your three-day weekend with family and friends!
With Gratitude,
Allison Emig

2nd Grade Field Trip to the School Forest Took Place on October 1st
Friday, October 1st, was a great day for sunshine, teamwork, and getting outside in our very own Garrison School Forest! 2nd grade embarked on their first trip of the year, exploring nature and their place within it through sense-of-place and nature-appreciation activities. What a wonderful way to kick off the month of October!
2nd Graders Took a Field Trip to Common Ground & Stony Kill Farm
6th Graders Took a Field Trip to the School Forest

8th Grade with Ms. Cook
8th-graders saw the forest through a new lens as they worked as citizen scientists to identify the abundant life filling our school forest. They worked in teams to collect data using the iNaturalist app, then organized that data into their own dichotomous keys. Science is everywhere!

Nurse Melissa's Corner
As we get into the cooler days ahead, please be aware that children will begin to get sick with colds, allergies, strep and a host of other illnesses. Please do not medicate your children and send them to school hoping they will feel better, this risks your child spreading germs and having a really bad day. Any student who is sent home from school with a symptom of COVID will need a test prior to their return. We are working very hard to keep our environment a safe one, please help us keep each other healthy. Testing for COVID continues to be a valuable tool, even for those without symptoms. You can also keep our school healthy by proactively testing your students. Please contact Nurse Melissa at mdefonce@gufs.org to set up a test.
Flu Vaccine Available at GUFS on October 25th:
If you are interested in having your child receive the Flu Vaccine during school hours on October 25th please complete the consent form below and return to Melissa DeFonce at mdefonce@gufs.org or have your child bring it into Nurse Melissa.

The Garrison Children’s Education Fund (GCEF) is a not-for-profit organization created to enrich the educational experience of children in grades K-12 who reside in the Garrison Union Free School District. Our focus is to create high quality programs in arts, science, history, academics and physical education. This fall, we approved $18,000 in grants, including: Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Week visiting author fees; costs for a new Carbon Storage measurement project in the School Forest; a multi-grade Mindful Yoga program; and the NYC Immigration experience field trip.
GCEF is in the process of updating our K-12 database of students attending GUFS and neighboring high schools. Please complete the attached Google Form by 10/18/2021 so we can share programming information, fundraisers and social events throughout the year. Thank you for your support.
