Lakeshore Library Learners
October 2019 - Parent Edition
Giving Students a Choice
My main goal with students and books is to instill in them a love of reading in order to help them become the best readers they can be. Students need the freedom to choose books they want to read based on their interests or we are stifling their passion for reading. They can be helped towards that one perfect book if they can't find one on their own. I believe we can help guide them as they enjoy these graphic novels towards other books that may be their "THE ONE" book. Several book series include or begin with a graphic novel which can hook the reader and encourage our children to continue the series, written in regular text.
I had the honor of hearing Pernille Ripp as the keynote speaker last year at the NC State Library Media Association Conference. I was very inspired by her words as she spoke both as a parent and a teacher. I encourage you to take a moment and check out her blog post on this topic.
Reading Bingo
Settings are fixed so that you sign up with your parent email as your child and you can only see your child's journal and I approve the post first.
If you signed up in September you do not need to do anything else.
We have a lot of kindergarten readers participating, but this is a school wide reading project so I would love to see more of my readers across all grade levels.
If you would like for your child to participate, you will need to sign them up using your email and the instructions below, please note, each grade level has a unique code to join:

Complete 5 reading activities across, down, or diagonal for a BINGO. Fill your card for a chance to win a free book at the end of the month! Parents, you can take pictures and post to your student's journal of the activity, and a picture of their completed card on the last day of the month. I can't wait to see everyone reading in fun and different ways!!
October Maker of the Month
Design a bookmark for our school and library. At the end of the month the bookmarks will be out on display in the library allowing the students and staff in our school to vote for their favorite. The winning bookmark will be printed and put out in my library as the bookmark of choice for the library. They will be available on my desk for students to take when they need a bookmark.
This year instead of signing up for a time to come to work in the Makerspace, each grade level will have a set day of the week to come and work at their teacher's discretion. They will need to let their teacher know that they want to participate and come to the library when the teacher allows. I have all of the materials needed for the project.
Mondays - Kindergarten and First Grade
Tuesdays - Second Grade
Wednesdays - Third Grade
Thursdays - Fourth Grade
Fridays - Fifth Grade
