Madison School places high expectations for appropriate student dress for the winter weather. The district’s policy states “all students will go outside unless they have a doctor’s note indicating that they should stay indoors. Playtime is cancelled when the temperature and wind speed create a wind chill factor of 15 degrees below zero.” All students should have proper clothing to go outside: winter jacket, boots, gloves/mittens and hat. In order to be safe, we expect all students to be prepared for the cold weather every day.

It is important for Madison students to be on time every day. Attendance is a very important factor in becoming a successful student. If your child is late getting to school, they are missing important activities in the morning. If you know your child will be late or absent, please call the attendance phone number

Dear Madison Families,

How are you? It has been a tricky year. Things are changing with all our students back to school four days a week. This is an adjustment for children and families. It can be like the beginning of school all over again. Please let me know if you have any concerns about your child. I am always happy to work with our students and/or help families to find referrals in our community.

Classroom Lessons

The lower grades: K-3 we will be learning about Empathy: feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling. We will identify feelings and recognize that people can have different feelings about the same situation. We will also look at how people’s feelings can change.

The upper grades: 4th grade will be learning about being assertive and how to ask for what you want or need in a calm, firm, respectful voice. 5th grade will be learning that others may have different perspectives and being able to understand someone else’s perspective.

Here is what is happening in the virtual art classroom this fall. Art is included within the Seesaw art classroom, where there will be a recorded art instruction video for each grade, every two weeks which is uploaded every other Monday. Students will then have two weeks to complete the assignment. Within those two weeks, there will also be a zoom meeting. Zoom meetings are not required but are encouraged for another opportunity of connection within your school’s community. We understand not everyone is available at these times.

Art Projects

All FPS elementary art teachers will be teaching the same art projects for the same weeks to their own students across the FPS district. We are doing our best to be consistent and equitable for each student during a pandemic school year.

Materials

We provide paper and certain supplies needed for each art project. Watercolor paint has been sent home. Materials needed to complete the art project will be listed on each lesson.

Completed Art Projects

Students upload a photo of their finished artwork and sent it via their art journal, in SeeSaw, to be assessed. I am sharing one lesson example per grade level below along with the “I Can” statements. Have you seen one of these being worked on at home? As your child if they have completed and sent me their art lessons. I am currently creating a new lesson for each grade level. As I’m writing this, there have been 3 lessons sent out with the new one to become available on art SeeSaw. The artwork I have received via SeeSaw has been amazing. I am proud of their hard work.

Kindergarten – I can create my king or queen self-portrait using line, shape and color

First Grade – I will learn about lines to create movement so that I can draw a frog in a yoga position.

Second Grade - I can create an insect filled with a pattern and color using a variety of art materials.

Third Grade - I can create art about events in my life.

Fourth Grade - I can create artwork inspired by Joseph Amddokpo by repeating lines and shapes to create patterns. I can fill the space in my artwork with straight, curved and bent lines traveling in different directions.

Fifth Grade - I will learn about the pop artist Romero Britto and I can create a pop art piece using line, shape and color.
