The demands of the 21st century require a new approach to education to fully prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. Research, practice, and common sense confirm that a whole child approach to education will develop and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow by addressing students' comprehensive needs through the shared responsibility of students, families, schools, and communities.
All educators want to improve the work they do for students, their families, and the community. Whether it's instruction, school climate, leadership, family engagement, or any of the other issues schools face on a daily basis, all educators need tools to help them improve their actions and methods. A whole child approach, which ensures that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, sets the standard for comprehensive, sustainable school improvement and provides for long-term student success.
ASCD's Whole Child approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children. Through this approach, educators, families, community members, and policymakers can move from a vision about educating the whole child to sustainable, collaborative actions.
- Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.
- Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.
- Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
- Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.
- Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment.
Madison Spirit Wear
The 2018-19 Madison Spirit Wear is here! This year's spirit wear was designed by our very own Kaelyn B. in 4th grade. Orders will be taken using the link below through Friday, August 31. Orders should take about 3 weeks to be processed and delivered to Madison where they will be distributed at school. If you have any questions, please contact the office - 913-856-0400.

Student Arrival Procedures (REPEAT)
Beginning Monday, August 20, we ask that all students walk themselves to the classroom or their designated morning locations. If a parent would like to walk their child to the classroom, we ask that they sign in at the office and receive a visitor sticker.
If you have any questions, please call the school office, 913.856-0400. The safety of your child is our utmost priority and we welcome any inquiries to ensure we keep all children safe at all times.
Student Pickup Procedures (REPEAT)
Students who will be car riders every day will be considered “everyday car riders”. During dismissal, these students will be escorted to the Pods. Staff members will supervise the car riders as they are dismissed to meet their ride. We request that parents remain in cars and form a pick-up line in the front circle area by the main entrance. Please pull forward and follow the path to expedite the process and keep our students safe. Each family will also have a car rider placard. This placard will notify the staff who is authorized to pick up students. Each family will receive two placards each year and can distribute these placards to whomever will pick up the students in the car rider loop. Teachers in the parking lot will radio teachers inside the building for children to come outside when their ride arrives. In order to eliminate congestion in the office and keep students safe, we ask that you wait in the “car rider” line in your car and do not come into Madison Elementary to pick up your child unless it is an emergency situation.
After consulting with the Gardner Police department, it was determined that in order to continue to keep our students, families, and staff safe, we will no longer offer Park and Pick Up as an option for afternoon dismissal. Safety is our top priority at Madison Elementary and the determination was made that Park and Pick Up presented an unsafe environment for our students, families, and staff. Families are encouraged to utilize the bus, the car rider loop, or be a walker (students will exit the front entrance where families can meet our Bears). As a result, the east parking lot will now be reserved for the bus and for preschool riders only. Preschool students who have older siblings will join their sibling(s) in the car rider loop. Thank you for your continued effort to keep our students, families, and staff during afternoon dismissal.
Change of Transportation (REPEAT)
Please let your child’s teacher know how your child will be leaving school. If you need to make a change, contact the office with a note or phone call no later than 3:00 PM. A child will not be allowed to go home in a different manner unless they have a CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION FORM. Thank you for your understanding as we work to ensure all of our students arrive home safely.
