AMHS Weekly Update

September 6, 2021- September 10,2021

The Environment as an Integrating Context (EIC)

Arabia Mountain High uses EIC (The Environment as an Integrating Context) instructional model. The EIC model was developed by the State Education and Environmental Roundtable (SEER) and seeks to improve student achievement through hands-on learning using both local natural and community surroundings. Students at Arabia are required to complete 20 service-learning hours. Service-learning is directly linked to the academic curriculum, making meaningful connections to Arabia Mountain’s educational goals. In contrast to community service, service-learning is an instructional methodology that combines academic endeavors with meeting identified community needs. Through service-learning activities, students apply subject area content and skills in authentic settings. This real-world context provides opportunities for students to work directly in our local environment, promoting the development of active participation and responsibility. Through service-learning activities, students discover that they can play an important role and make a significant difference in the community.

Next week will be our first B-week for the 21-22 school year. During B-weeks students will follow the modified A/B Block Schedule. This week due to the Labor Day Holiday, students will report to 2nd, EIC, 4th, and 6th periods on Tuesday and Thursday and 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th periods on Wednesday and Friday. Students can check their schedules in Infinite Campus for their EIC class assignment. The EIC class locator is also posted at the school for our students. EIC projects will engage students in the research process and promote the use of 21st Century Learning Skills (Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity) that will help students think critically and connect with prior knowledge while at the same time generate curiosity as they learn and apply new concepts.

Students will receive a summative grade (test/major project grade) in one of the following core subjects by grade level:

9th grade: Mathematics

10th grade: Science

11th grade: English

12th grade: Social Studies

Please encourage your student to actively engage in their EIC research project this school year.

Time Management and Study Skills

It is important that your student develops strong time management and study skills to help them be successful at Arabia Mountain High School. The development of these skills will help students to better manage classroom and homework assignments while at the same time help them to perform better on assessments. It is imperative that students break larger projects or tasks into smaller pieces to help them manage them better. Encouraging your student to study daily, by reviewing class notes, completing practice problems, previewing course content are a few ways to help them to gain a better understanding of the course content. It is encouraged that students spend time grappling with course material, as this is a significant part of their learning. Students are encouraged to write down questions so that they may ask during class or tutorial sessions. Our core content tutorials will begin on Tuesday, September 7th. The Core Content tutorial will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm -4:30 pm.

Tuesdays- Math and English

Thursdays- Science and Social Studies
