October Reading Connection Newsletter
Social Worker Corner
Hello families -
I hope this newsletter finds you in the Green Zone. Wait, what does that mean?
As the School Social Worker, one of the things I do at the beginning of every school year is visit each classroom and introduce or remind students about the Zones of Regulation.
The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum designed to foster self - regulation and emotional control. Students learn about the 4 different zones to aid in their self-awareness of feelings and actions. Increased self-awareness is the first step to increased self - control.
Encourage your child to talk about the zones at home and identify feelings together!
Blue zone - When our brain and body is moving slowly - we may be sad, sick or tired.
Green zone - When our brain and body is ready to learn - we may be feeling proud, happy and calm.
Yellow zone - When are brain and body are alert and moving AND we are still in control - we may be feeling excited, frustrated, or worried.
Red Zone - When are brain and body are moving very fast AND we are not in control - we may be feeling mad, aggressive or estatic.
It's OK to be in the different zones - our feelings change all day long. Once we recognize which zone we are in we can try a strategy - like deep breaths, stretching or humming our favorite song - to get us into the Green Zone at school.
Peace ~

Pre-School
We are 3 weeks into Preschool at Pine Bend for the 2018-2019 school year! The preschoolers are getting used to the daily routine and working together to be kind friends.
The preschoolers practice developing skills every day—including letter names, counting, writing their name, as well as sharing with others and taking turns. In October we will focus on the fall season, changing leaves, and celebrate by having an apple tasting and learning about pumpkins!
Kindergarten
We are working on social skills and have found that there are a few new rules to follow in our Kindergarten classes. We are working hard to follow them and adjust to all the new ways of doing things.
We are getting ready to go on our first field trip to Carpenter Nature Center's Apple Orchard, so we have learned a lot about trees and apples. Our classes are continuing to try to be "Team-makers" rather than "Team-breakers". Yea for Kindergarten!
First Grade
Second Grade
Our first month of second grade has been so fun and gone so fast! We have started our year with learning new 2nd grade routines and learning about each other through activities and sharing. Our days have been filled with math, new books and reading, art projects, and writing about goals for this school year. We have also had fun with bus safety, celebrating the start of fall, and ending our month with Homecoming Spirit Week and fun dress up days!
We are looking forward to the rest of our year with this special group of students. They have done a great job so far showing us that they want to have a great year at Pine Bend!
Third Grade
September has been a busy month in third grade. We started the year of with some STEM challenges to get the students working collaboratively to solve problems. In reading, our focus has been on story structure and main idea. In math, we have started the year off deciding how to use different kinds of graphs to look at data. In health, we are studying the brain and how it responds to stress . We made calming jars to remind us how a calm brain helps us to pay attention and retain information we have learned.
