From the Hawk's Nest
January 5th, 2024
Dear Hawthorne Families,
Welcome to 2024! We are so excited to have all of our students back and learning in our classrooms! We have a ton of great things happening over the next few weeks. Please be sure to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
I also wanted to let you know that the calendar this year is a little different then in years past. Instead of a 2.5 day week, the calendar committee worked hard to make sure students did not have as many short weeks built into their schedules. Instead, they will have two four day weeks with no school on January 15th and 22nd. I have attached the district calendar below. Thank you!
Parent Council Meeting Reminder
Our Hawthorne Parent Council will be meeting at Noon on January 10th in the Hawthorne Library. Please plan to attend as the AMAZING Parent Council is planning some fun events and items coming this spring!
As shared in a letter from Mrs. Klock, benchmark testing will begin January 8th. All students will be completing those tests over the next few weeks with the goal of having all students completed by the 19th. Once those tests are completed, a report will be emailed home with the progress of each child. We are excited to see how much our students have grown since the start of the school year.
January Library Topics From Mrs. Linder
Students in K-5 Library/Information classes will begin the Montana Adopt-a-Species unit. K-5 students will practice logging in and navigating Chromebooks by exploring age-appropriate databases such as World Book Kids and Pebble Go to learn more about red foxes. Students will also read nonfiction books and magazines, browse photographs, and see/touch red fox fur and pawprints. K-2 students will create a movie poster and 3-5 students will create a comic strip to showcase what they learned about red foxes and how their “superpowers” allow them to adapt to life in Montana.

Bison is on the menu!
Helena Public Schools Food Services Director Robert Worthy recently secured a $29,000 “Local Food for School” grant from the Office of Public Instruction to incorporate Montana foods into school menus.
This spring school lunches will feature Montana-raised bison, Flathead cherries and Montana-grown vegetables.
Mr. Worthy launched a survey to find out how families would like their bison served and the results are in!
Here are the winning dishes and the days they will be served. Watch for surveys to come for those delicious Flathead cherries and Montana-grown veggies.
