Principal's Corner
Greetings South Garland Families.
This week, we are continuing to plan for our Fall Intersession during the week of Oct. 6th. Intersessions are strategically scheduled to provide intervention, enrichment, and accelerations following a grading cycle, rather than delaying these experiences until the summer. For intervention, the ability to provide students with these more immediate recovery opportunities will reduce the likelihood of compounding knowledge gaps when new grade level content is presented and students do not possess the requisite skills. Each student will have individualized instruction to meet their needs, as well as the opportunity to participate in fun contests with prizes.
We encourage students to attend if they:
- have skill deficits identified by a universal screener, standardized test results, formative assessments, or cycle/course failures
- need accelerations to improve performance on assessments, boost course credits and/or prepare for college assessments
- would like to have enrichment through curriculum extension, including camps
Some students will receive invitations for specific sessions. Our campuses will analyze data to determine student session invitations. Once a student has received their invite and confirmed their attendance, their teachers will use the student's data to create specific lessons tailored to their academic needs.
What to expect
- The instructional model will mimic how instruction was provided the week prior (ex. virtual, face-to-face, etc.).
- The student to teacher ratio is 15:1.
- Students will be served breakfast and lunch.
- Transportation will be provided for eligible students.
- Certain enrichment/acceleration sessions will have an attendance cap and will fill quickly.
- Students may also attend remotely as well.
- Intersession will be held during the following times each day:
The hours of intersession for high school are from 7:30am-11:30am
Please contact our school at 972-926-2700 for more information and registration.
2020 TRE (Tax Rate Election)
Most of us would refer to this TRE is a Tax Reduction Election because the word “Reduction” is a major component of this election. Not only that, it could also be known as a Tax Benefit Election. Here is how:
If the TRE is approved by voters, our new property tax rate would be approximately $1.34- a nearly $.05 decrease from last year and a nearly $.12 decrease from the 2018-2019 school year. In fact, the tax rate would be the lowest our community has seen in six years!
The TRE will greatly impact all schools in GISD and increase opportunities while providing tax rate relief for every business and homeowner. Please view our Proud Superintendent’s message about the wonderful news about the 2020 TRE below. South Garland Family, the time is now to be a part of a magnificent opportunity for student achievement, academic programming and extracurricular advancement at South Garland High School.
