AKArt at the Habana Bienal
May 21-26, 2015
Join AKArt Advisory + Talk Cinema as we visit The Habana Bienal, Artist Studios, Cuba's Museums and Foundations
Enjoy a rare and special opportunity to join AKArt Advisory for an exciting and informative trip to Cuba.
The week—timed to coincide with the opening of the 12th Habana Bienal—will be devoted to meeting and sharing ideas with Cuban artists, curators, and Havana's community. On the occasion of the Bienal, the contemporary art of Cuba, Latin America, Asia, and Africa will be fully displayed throughout the city—making this curated trip a unique global experience to view all of this work in one location. For collectors and art enthusiasts, the Habana Bienal is a good way to stay abreast of the developments in the visual arts in these regions.
Art + Music + Culture Comes Alive May 21-26, 2015
Havana comes alive during the first week of the Bienal, when many venues throughout the city open up for dynamic installations. The week will be a citywide art event, with multiple locations and artist studios open to you each day. Visits will take place in and around Havana, and will include a variety of cultural activities and substantive interactions with Cuban cultural experts, artists, musicians, and people from the community.
During the trip, you will be staying at the Hotel Parque Central—Cuba's finest five star hotel. The city has also recently experienced a foodie revolution, with incredible new private restaurants opening—to the delight of locals and visitors alike.
People to People Travel + Talk Cinema
The trip is made possible through People to People educational travel—reinstated in 2012 by United States President Obama—and updated in January 2015 which allows Americans to travel to Cuba, via a general license, issued by the US Department of the Treasury (OFAC) and Talk Cinema. All programs under a license issued to Talk Cinema, Inc. include a full schedule of educational exchange activities, designed to promote meaningful interactions between Americans and the people of Cuba. People to People travel is not tourist-oriented nor self directed, but it is both rewarding and unique. It allows participants to visit a wide scope of organizations, institutions, and community projects that provide a deeper understanding of Cuba, its people, and its culture.
Art Collecting in Cuba
The US Treasury law allows American art collectors to purchase art in Cuba within OFAC’s allowance for the gathering of “informational materials” in Cuba (§§ 515.206(a) and 515.332). This rule allows collectors of visual arts, photography, media arts, and other art products, (as well as music, literature, etc.) to purchase art in Cuba and to bring it into the United States. Because there are limitations on how much cash you can carry into Cuba ($10,000), often this is not enough to purchase important works of art. As a special service to qualified collectors, we will work with the artist and any qualified collector to allow them to make a down payment on a work, carry the work with them to the US and, after that, pay the artist the balance owed.
While U.S. regulations regarding credit card use in Cuba have been changed, it will take time for the financial institutions to enable credit card use. At the time of writing, no U.S. credit cards can be used in Cuba. We will update you as this changes.
