Purpose of "The Jet Way"
Words Their Way - A New Approach to Phonics, Spelling & Vocabulary
This year, Roncalli Elementary school is excited to implement a phonics, spelling, and vocabulary program called Words Their Way in place of previous spelling programs. The main benefit of Words Their Way is that it differentiates instruction, allowing students to work at their appropriate developmental level.
All students in grades K-4 have been given an initial spelling inventory to guide teachers in placing each student into a group of words called a “sort.” From this point, students will begin working with a different group of words each week. A new set of words will be introduced in class each week. Students will work in various ways in the classroom and home on their word sort.
The activities your student will engage in will allow your student(s) to further practice and learn common spelling patterns instead of simply memorizing a list of words each week. Words Their Way focuses less on memorization, and more on allowing students to study the spelling pattern, definition, and practical use of the word and become curious about words in their world.
Students will have spelling checks (aka spelling tests). The primary purpose of these spelling checks will be to help guide students’ instruction versus memorization o the words.
Don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher if you have questions.
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment
The Fall MAP assessments measure achievement and growth in Grades 1 - 4, math, reading, and language usage. Our MAP testing window is open until October 1, 2022. Your student(s) teacher will communicate specific testing dates with you in the upcoming weeks.

NEW EXTENDED CARE SIGN-UP PROCEDURE:
We have tried to remain as flexible as possible with extended care schedules; however, for the safety and well-being of all, we must change our scheduling system. Starting with scheduling for the week of October 3-7, 2022, we are eliminating the use of paper calendars and transitioning over to electronic registration. All families will be REQUIRED to submit their extended care needs electronically via the form below.
A registration link will be sent to our extended care families every Friday. Families must register their students by 3:30 p.m. the following Thursday to give us time to arrange for proper staffing. Your extended care needs must be completed and submitted by 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays to guarantee a spot during the upcoming week.
FOR EXAMPLE ONLY:
My student(s) need care during the week of September 26 - 30, 2022.
The link to sign-up will be sent on: Friday, September 16, 2022
Extended care reservations via Google Form would be due: Thursday, September 22, 2022, by 3:30 p.m.
Students who do not have reservations will not be permitted to attend extended care.
Families needing care after the Thursday deadline need to call the school office at 920-683-6892 to inquire about potential availability. Open spots will not be guaranteed and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the proper student-to-adult ratios.
This week's form is for extended care needs for the week of October 3, 2022, through October 7, 2022. Please submit this form by 3:30 p.m. on September 29, 2022, to reserve your spot in extended care.
