October News from Rosedale

Things you need and want to know about our school community

Happy October!

We are settling into the school year. It is so good to have your child as part of our community.

We value seeing your child everyday and helping them grow academically, socially and emotionally.

HSD's motto is 9 days of absences or less is best. Our goal at Rosedale is to decrease our chronic absenteeism and increase our overall attendance.

Your child is welcome at school with anything but a fever over 100.5 or vomiting and diarrhea.

Thanks for sharing your student with us. We are so glad they are here.

Featured Grade: Fourth Grade

In conjunction with National Disability Awareness Month, Rosedale's October theme has been "All Abilities Are Awesome." In 4th grade, we have embraced this theme through conversations with teachers, students, and some amazing parent guest speakers. The students have been working on developing empathy while examining our similarities and strengths. We have read books, watched videos, and practiced people-first language in our efforts to get to know one another better. Many 4th graders shared how they have known some of their classmates for years and are just now discovering their many commonalities. As we continue to break down social barriers together, we become a stronger unit, thus preparing our students for life in a diverse world.

Calming Corner (here's a self regulation tip from our wellness center, THE LION'S DEN)

A calming activity that works for anyone who feels like they have a little too much energy or perhaps may need to slow down their heart rate is called Arm Squeezes or Squeezies. School Moves has several mindfulness activities that help students practice slow repetitive movement. Moving slowly and repetitively can be very calming for students and adults.

Another School Moves calming activity is Dots. Slowly counting while squeezing your hand can help during transition time. Practicing Dots on one or both hands can help students who have left the Green Zone. Practice both of these strategies several times is necessary.

Try practicing Squeezies or Dots while you are calm to help train your brain to remember to do this instead of getting frustrated or anxious. Being in the Green Zone is a good place to be.

Child Find

Parents are welcome to refer their child for services designed for students identified as talented and gifted. Students who score at or above the 97th percentile on a nationally standardized, norm-referenced test of overall reading or math or on a mental abilities test, and have other confirming evidence that they learn at a rapid rate and advanced level, are identified as TAG students. With parent input, individual plans are made to adjust the rate and level of the student’s instruction to meet his or her specific needs.

If you think your child may qualify for TAG services, and want information about the referral and identification process, please contact:Julie Hendren 503-844-1200

News from RPG (Rosedale Parent Group)

Hello, Rosedale Families!

We hope you are all enjoying this beautiful fall! The Rosedale parent groups appreciates every single one of you that have helped out and shown up so far, and we have a bunch of opportunities to get involved coming up!
We are taking T-shirt orders for Rosedale shirts right now. New this year: we are offering a softer feel tee and also a dri-fit tee! We are still offering hoodies and zippies as well as adult sizes. You should have seen the order form come home in your child’s backpack in the past week or so. The due date for those is October 25. We will have a table at the Carnival that evening for last minute orders. Make sure you get your family some Rosedale shirts for school spirit days!
As I mentioned above, we are having our Fall Carnival this Friday, October 25th from 6-8pm. We still need parent volunteers to help set up from 5-6pm, run games in one hour shifts from 6-7pm and 7-8pm, and help clean up after. If you can help please email rosedalepto@gmail.com. It’s going to be a great time and we look forward to seeing everyone there!
Finally, our biggest fundraiser of the year so far is happening now. This money helps the PTO bring more technology to Rosedale, fund field trips, outdoor school, etc. Please help your child put out requests for friends and family support through email, text, and social media. They can order online no matter how far away they are. Maybe share the link with your co-workers! As always, be cautious with door to door sales. The kids earn prizes based on number of items sold, and we will have the top 25 sellers out to participate in a game truck, along with a grand prize for the top seller! We appreciate your support and help making this fundraiser a success.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 5th, 7pm, upstairs in the library. Childcare is available upon request, and refreshments are provided. We want to hear from you regarding meeting dates and times. Is a day meeting better? Come to the meeting and let us know! Also, the teacher with the most parents at the meeting wins a coffee gift card, so come help your teacher win!
We are always available to answer questions. Feel free to email Rosedalepto@gmail.com. Thanks.
