Differentiating Instruction and Assessment for English Learners
According to Lau v Nichols (1974), schools must provide English learners access to education through differentiation of classroom instruction and assessment. It can be challenging to identify appropriate accommodations and modifications for various language levels, so in the area below, there is a one-page differentiation chart for each language level. Find your ELL student's overall language level on his or her language plan and/or most recent ACCESS score report, and click on the corresponding button below to receive immediate and compact ideas for differentiation right at your fingertips.

Explore and develop the language of science with a game that tests knowledge of how organisms can be sorted and grouped. Classification is a skill that appears in the WIDA Can-Do descriptors at multiple language levels and is a great way for students to apply science knowledge.
Reminder: ACCESS testing
ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners) is a secure large-scale English language proficiency assessment given to Kindergarten through 12th graders who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). This annual test starts on Monday, December 1st, 2014. Keep an eye out for notifications of when your ELL students will be pulled from class to complete their testing. ACCESS score results will be received in spring 2015.
