Principal's Message
With the incoming students it also means that we'll soon say goodbye to our 8th Graders. The end of the year is quickly winding down as the days just seem to fly right by. At this week's PARRT Assembly I reflected with the 8th Graders about their time here at Franklin. We talked the importance of making a positive first impression with people and hopefully they did that as a 6th Grader. We then transferred into how they want to be remembered.
These last 20+ days we will celebrate, reflect, have fun, and of course learn and we encourage all students and families to join us in that endeavor.
School Start Times for 2017-18

Franklin's Outstanding Building Volunteer
Paul Salamon was recognized as this year's Franklin Outstanding Building Volunteer. We appreciate all our wonderful volunteers who put in hundreds of hours to help support students and staff. Here's the excerpt from Paul's nomination:
Paul Salamon has been working with the Future Cities Program at Franklin Middle School for over twenty years.A retired engineer from Rockwell, Paul has been truly committed to the Future Cities program by mentoring hundreds of teams, and even more students as they worked on all components of the Future City competition.Paul is a unique role model in that he rides his bike to Franklin daily during Future City season to assist the students in their work. Rain or shine, you will Paul pedaling to Franklin. He does this not only for exercise, but for the environment.
The District introduced members of the 2017 Volunteer Hall of Fame at a special event on April 24. The outstanding volunteers represent each school’s volunteer workforce where some 7,000 community members contributed more than 137,000 hours in support of students and staff during the last school year.
“Our volunteer workforce includes parents, retirees, students, business professionals, and other community members who generously give of their time and talents,” said Marcia Hughes, Community Relations Supervisor. “Last year, some 7000 school volunteers recorded over 137,000 hours of service in support of students. This is about the same as our having paid 128 paraprofessionals to work 6 hours every school day. The contributions made by volunteers are so appreciated!” View images from Event.
The annual recognition event was held at the Educational Leadership and Support Center and featured entertainment from Coolidge Elementary School students. The 2017 Outstanding Building Volunteers in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are:

From the Clinic (Current 6th Graders)
Before incoming 7th and 12th grade students can begin school in the fall (2017-18 school year), they must meet the new mandatory state meningococcal vaccination requirement. Students without proof of vaccination, or a state exemption, will not be allowed to attend classes in the fall.
If you have a student that will be entering 7th or 12th grade in the 2017-18 school year, please check with your primary healthcare provider NOW about meningococcal vaccination (and Tdap vaccine for incoming 7th graders). You may bring in proof of meningococcal/Tdap immunization to your student’s school health office at any time before the end of this school year.
If you are unable to have vaccines paid for through your insurance, have Medicaid insurance, or do not insurance, your student may qualify to receive the vaccine through Metro Care Connection, Cedar Rapids Community School District’s School-based Health Clinic. Metro Care Connection will hold outreach vaccine clinics at all middle schools the second week of May 2017. A permission form must be competed/signed before a student may receive the vaccine. Please contact your school health office 319-558-2076 or the Metro Care Connection Program office at 319-558-2481 for any questions.
