- 20 March - Lord North resigned (pressure from MPs) - replaced by Earl of Shelburne - became colonial secretary (+ favoured peace)
- April - new ministry ordered the evacuation of New York, Charleston + Savannah
- July 1782 - Rockingham died + Shelburne became prime minister
Peace Negotiations
- Shelburne wanted to separate France + the USA - prepared to be generous to Americans - John Jay + John Adams (leaders of American peace delegation) opened separate discussions with Britain (distrusted the French)
- 30 November 1782 - Americans signed a draft peace treaty with Britain
- 20 January 1783 - terms of of the treaty temporarily accepted - Britain announced an end of hostilities on 4 February
- 3 September 1783 - Treaty of Paris signed by Britain, USA, France, Spain + Holland
