Magnesium and calcium were once believed to be the same material but in 1808, a professor named Joseph Black discovered that the two weren't in fact the same material. Magnesium's atomic number is 12 which means magnesium has 12 protons and electrons. Magnesium has an atomic mass of 24 so it has 12 neutrons as well. Magnesium boils at 1,091° Celsius and melts at 650° Celsius.
